Consultant Psychiatrist in an Older Adult CMHT with Inpatient beds

Job summary

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare are looking to recruit a full time Consultant Psychiatrist.

The Post Holder will work in the City CMHT and be responsible for any inpatients within the same catchment area i.e. a geographical based / non-functionalised model of care.

The inpatient beds are located at the Harplands Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent ST46TH. There are 2 mental health wards for older adults. Ward 6 is for service users with organic conditions, primarily dementia and Ward 7 which is our functional ward. The post holder would only be responsible for service users on Ward 7 (the functional ward) within their catchment area. Ward 6 is covered by a different Consultant.

The Post Holder will work in the City CMHT and be responsible for any inpatients within the same catchment area i.e. a geographical based / non-functionalised model of care.

The Trust's Older Adult CMHTs offer services to adults over the age of 65 years. The post is an existing full-time position with the City CMHT, covering the City of Stoke-on-Trent and surround, a population of approximately 42,000 over 65 year olds.

Main duties of the job

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust is a specialist Mental Health, Learning Disability Trust.

The Trust employs approximately 30 Consultant Psychiatrists in a range of specialties. Our Trust provides specialist Mental Health (adult and old age), Addiction (inpatient, and community in North Staffordshire only), Neuropsychiatry and Learning Disability, and tier 3 Child Psychiatry Services across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. We also provide specialist tier 4 inpatient children's services on a wider regional basis. North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust has an annual budget of over £70 million, and serves a population of nearly half a million people with a (Mental Illness Needs Index MINI 0.926 on average). It employs over 1500 members of staff (whole time equivalents including both support and clinical) and operates across approximately 30 sites with the main hospital being the Harplands Hospital.

The Trust employs over 30 Consultant Psychiatrists, covering Old Age Psychiatry, General Adult, Rehabilitation Psychiatry, CAMHS, Liaison, Neuropsychiatry, Substance Misuse and Learning Disability services.

The Trust was rated as Outstanding in 2019, only the second mental health trust to achieve this rating.

The Trust was awarded the HSJ NHS Trust of Year in 2022.

The post holder would typically be expected to provide 4 follow up appointments of 45min duration (30mins clinical and 15min admin) per session. Alternatively new appointments are for a duration of 1.5 hours (1 hour clinical and 30min admin). No more than 1 new patient per session. Home visits are not frequently required and as such are arranged as and when deemed clinically necessary. Any home visit would take place in lieu of a clinic session. Any travel time would be factored in and accommodated for.

It prides itself on a full multidisciplinary team which includes allied health professionals, activity workers, clinical psychology and dedicated carer support worker. The postholder would on average cover 7 beds but no more than 10 at any one time and no fewer than 4.
