Job summary

Senior Service Manager [Band 8b] Specialist Directorate:

An excellent opportunity has arisen within the Specialist Directorate in the role of Senior Service Manager.

You will be responsible for the operational management and leadership, planning and delivery of clinical services across the agreed portfolio

You will also be a member of the senior management team and will contribute to the shaping of the strategic direction of the service and the Trust as a whole.

You will be highly visible have a focus upon Innovation, Quality, Safety and Efficiency. This includes how we provide care across our service area and how we look after, recognise, engage and develop all of our staff across the Directorate.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the operational, performance and business management within the Specialist Directorate. The post holder will work under the direction and line management of the Associate Director. The Service Manager post(s) (8A) and QILN within the Directorate will have a daily line of report into the Senior Service Manager.

  • Ensure patient safety and excellent service quality across the service, implementing and embedding the Trust's Proud to CARE and SPAR priorities within the Service.
  • Responsible for Leading on improving clinical quality of services, liaising with the Directorate Quality Improvement Lead Nurse as appropriate.
  • Support the delivery of agreed specific performance targets within the service and develop strategies and operational plans / policies for improvement.
  • Work with corporate colleagues, specifically the Performance and Digital function, to develop the management information requirements necessary for the effective management of the service.
  • Manage both direct and indirect costs and overheads relating to the service and work with the accountable Associate Director to meet agreed financial positions, including delivering financial balance.
  • Deputise as required for the Associate Director

  1. Strategic Business Planning and Service Development
  • Provide expertise and support to the Associate Director in developing and implementing plans for the service. These must be in line with corporate strategies and link directly to relevant legislation as well as national and local healthcare guidance and initiatives
  • Responsible for the interpretation and implementation of broad policies and NHS guidance, contribute to all relevant corporate policies and strategy, developing services locally in line with them.
  • Lead and coordinate service objectives ensuring relevance to local and national priorities.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Director, lead the development and review of service business plans, including the development of appropriate operational, financial, market assessment and workforce plans for the service, with the appropriate involvement of Quality Improvement Lead Nurse and Service Managers, clinicians and the wider workforce.

  • Plan and implement operational management strategies within the area of responsibility, under the guidance of the Associate Director to meet organisational performance plans within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the Directorate Service Managers and Quality Improvement Lead Nurses within the Service, as delegated by the Associate Director, ensuring clear communication of policy, business objectives and agreed targets.
  • Provide the required leadership to ensure the implementation of effective and appropriate performance management systems and processes to ensure delivery of performance targets.
  • Lead services in relation to the performance management agenda. Develop and introduce strategies and process changes to ensure recurrent achievement of activity at target levels. This includes liaison with clinicians to influence working practices to achieve the necessary changes
  • Interpret and analyse complex data in relation to performance management using Trust software to develop performance management reports.
  • Implement and embed Service reporting and management.
