We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Band 5 Physiotherapist to join our Community Learning Disability Health Team on a 9 month fixed term basis to cover maternity leave. This experience will give the post holder an excellent opportunity to develop their leadership and management skills as well as building clinical expertise that will enhance and broaden their clinical skills within a Learning Disability Team.
Main duties of the job
The Band 5 Physiotherapist is an active member of a team that provides a high quality; evidence based physiotherapy service for the clients with Learning Disabilities
Key Duties/Responsibilities
Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
Provide a holistic, physiotherapeutic assessment of clients with a Learning Disabilities. These clients may present with complex physical, emotional and psychological needs as a result of their diagnosis.
Provide a physiotherapeutic diagnosis, to develop and deliver individualised treatment programmes and make appropriate referrals to other disciplines.
Hold responsibility for a defined clinical area and own caseload, working with supervision. Access to advice and support from senior physiotherapists is available, clinical work will be routinely evaluated by senior staff. Supervision with a designated Band 6 physiotherapist takes the form of forma l training, reflective practice and clinical reasoning.
Be a source of knowledge for clients, relatives and colleagues of all disciplines within the Trust. The post holder works closely with all members of the multi disciplinary team to provide specialist input to a planned programme of co-ordinated care including appropriate and timely discharge.

Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of clients.
Manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.
Undertake a comprehensive assessment of clients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies. These may include symptoms directly related to the disease process, symptoms related to treatment, or symptoms arising from pre-existing pathologies.
Use clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate physiotherapeutic diagnosis of their condition and place this within the context of their diagnosis and its treatment.
Develop listening skills to understand the physical, emotional and psychological needs of clients and carers and incorporate these into treatment planning.
Plan and provide both group and individual physiotherapy treatment programmes incorporating client focused goals and outcomes and ensure appropriate discharge planning. This will be based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice, physiotherapy treatment options and a developing knowledge of Learning Disabilities.
Assess the patient's understanding of treatment proposals and gain valid informed consent to implement the treatment programme. To have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and strategies to communicate effectively with patients, For example patients may be unable to accept their diagnosis, may have a hearing loss, a visual impairment, affected speech, cognitive problems or have a learning disability.
Evaluate patient progress and re-assess and alter treatment programmes if required.
Develop advanced communication skills, with the support of senior physiotherapy staff, to work with clients and carers in complex/sensitive situations.
Use communication skills and clinical reasoning to enable the patient and carers to adapt psychologically to disease, role changes and disability, and to set realistic physiotherapy goals.
Develop comprehensive discharge plans in collaboration with the clients, carers and the appropriate multi-disciplinary team members.
Represent the physiotherapy service and individual patients/carers at multi disciplinary meetings and case conferences to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary service, and integrate physiotherapy treatment into the treatment programme and discharge planning.
Supply relevant written advice and information in line with department protocols.
Ensure that high standards of documentation are maintained. These should meet professional and departmental standards. These may be hand-written or electronic.
Assess for, and issue appropriate appliances and/or equipment in line with the Equipment Loan Policy and Medical Devices Agency Regulations.
Use moderate physical effort, highly developed handling skills, manual dexterity and coordination on a daily basis to assess, treat, mobilise and move patients. With more complex patients this may require the considerable effort of more than one therapist.
Comply with the Trust Manual Handling Policy and local therapeutic handling guidance at all times.
With the support of physiotherapy staff, develop personal coping strategies to work in a mental health setting. Physiotherapists working within this setting may have daily exposure to challenging behaviour, emotional stress and severely distressed patients.
