An exciting opportunity for highly skilled and motivated individual has arisen at the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust to join as a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine. Special Interest in Geriatrics, the management of Acute Frailty patients would be desirable. The successful candidates will play a key role in the continuing development of the Division of Medicine and the wider organisation as the trust strives to continue to improve the services available to our local community through the engagement of high-quality clinical leadership.
Main duties of the job
- The purpose of this role is to support and further develop the General Internal Medicine service and to provide daily review of patients from unselected medical take, to ensure early review of patients and with timely senior decision making.
- As a trust, we are proud to host a wider Medicine department boasting dedicated rapid access clinic facilities in various specialties including Cardiology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology. These are co-located to Accident & Emergency Department and supports SDEC, AMU and Front Door Frailty services. These posts are a key part of the Trusts strategy to deliver a step change in the clinical model for managing unplanned medical attendances. With established close working relationships between the Accident and Emergency Department and the medical specialties, the appointee will join a highly motivated team.
- The successful candidates will be team players and with considerable experience and enthusiasm towards Acute Frailty and Geriatric Medicine of particular interest. The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust delivers significant under-graduate and post-graduate medical education and benefits from strong links with the University of Warwick.
- Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council at the time of interview and be on the specialist register for General Internal Medicine with experience in Geriatric and Acute Frailty.

- Deliver day-to-day clinical care and leadership on the Geriatric and Acute Frailty wards.
- Undertake a weekly clinic in the form of Falls Clinic/Frailty clinics.
- Develop the service in line with General Medicine/Geriatric Medicine as a new stand-alone speciality within the Trust.
- Review current medical practice and patient pathways within George Eliot Hospital and in conjunction with Clinical lead and Clinical Director further develop the service in line with best practice.
- Lead ongoing development of clinical guidelines in General Medicine/Geriatric Medicine.
- Actively participate in the Medicine departmental teaching Programme and undertake clinical supervision, teaching and training of undergraduate and post graduate medical trainees as well as other multi-professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies.
- There will be the potential to develop a speciality interest within or outside of General Medicine, if the post holder has an area of expertise and it is a service requirement of the Trust.
- Develop and maintain good communications with General practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
- Comply with all relevant Trust Policies, Procedures and mandatory training
- Ensure that all trust wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come in contact with services provided by GEH.
- Ensure compliance with all appropriate legal and statutory requirements, including Health and Safety, Standing financial Instructions and Incident Reporting.
- Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers
- Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
- Take responsibility for the professional clinical supervision and development of trainee doctors and other staff within the specialty. This will include the appraisal of doctors in training, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of foundation year doctors.
- Ensure own practice is up to date which will include taking responsibility for own Continuous Professional Development and participating in the Trusts Performance and Annual Review system.
- Participate in the continuing professional development scheme of an appropriate medical college and the Trust & University Joint Appraisal scheme. The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
