Main duties of the job

  • Clinical leadership through effective monitoring and implementation of standards and evidence-based practice.
  • To ensure safe and high quality delivery of care to patients undertaking endoscopy and ensure full compliance to JAG standards or endoscopy care.
  • Provide clinical leadership and direction to nursing team.
  • Act as a role model for all nursing staff within the unit promoting professional practice at all times.
  • To take responsibility for the day to day management of the clinical area.
  • To deputise for the Lead Nurse/Senior sister in their absence.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Co-ordinator of the shift the rostered allocation, referring to Lead Nurse/senior sister if appropriate or available.
  • Maintain clinical competence of self and others as determined by service need and job descriptions.
  • To facilitate and build team working between nurses and the multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
  • Ensure that risk assessments are complete as per Trust policy for manual handling, health & safety and other relevant areas of concern.
  • Ensure that equipment and the environment supports the delivery of high standards of care at all times.
  • Maintain a good standard of communication with the multidisciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • To ensure delivery of safe, effective and efficient care to patients undergoing endoscopy procedures.
  • Provide specialised information and advice to patients, relatives and carers and other professionals in the provision of Endoscopy related procedures.

Managerial

  • To support the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff.
  • To support the Lead Nurse/ Senior Sister in ensuring that waiting list targets are met.
  • To support the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister to initiate and prioritise developments within the service as part of the business/strategic planning process.
  • To assist the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister in ensuring that staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery, maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.
  • Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across Multidisciplinary team.
  • To assist with the management of ward resources in an efficient and effective manner.
  • To take part in the interview process of the recruitment and selection of new staff if requested by the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister.
  • Ensure information on the unit information system is correct and updated regularly.
  • To deputise for the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister in her absence.
  • To assist the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister in establishing and maintaining stock control, ensuring that the products ordered are appropriate, up to date and cost effective.

Education and Training

  • To appraise junior staff within your team as identified by the Lead Nurse/Senior Sister and to identify with the Senior Sister the learning needs of those staff.
  • To ensure own competence and own personal development plan is reviewed with Lead Nurse/Senior sister at annual appraisal.
  • Plan training sessions within unit environment evaluating effectiveness within clinical care to patients using appropriate audit tools.
  • To facilitate, maintain and audit the delivery and effectiveness of clinical care in accordance with the care standards, operational protocols and guidelines.
  • Create a learning environment, which actually facilitates learning and structured personal development for all staff and learners.

Professional

  • To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment and the Trust, where appropriate, by promoting a professional image of nursing.
  • To attend relevant meetings, courses and seminars and keep professionally up to date to enable effective implementation of government initiatives.
