An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Directorate of Surgery at George Eliot Hospital as a Deputy Operational Manger.

The Directorate of Surgery covers; Trauma & Orthopaedics, Urology, Breast Surgery, Lower GI and General Surgery, Plastics, Audiology, Oral, ENT and Ophthalmology. You will be joining a team of two other Deputy Operational Mangers, reporting into the Operational Management team.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will support the management of day-to-day operational issues in the services assigned to them, and will have responsibility for providing management and leadership to the operational and administrative and clerical teams.

The postholder will enable the successful delivery of high quality services for the people of North Warwickshire, and will ensure that systems and process that enable the team to function effectively are successfully embedded within the service.

Successful candidates will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be well organised, innovative with the ability to work well autonomously as well as part of a team and will be committed to improving services for our local population.

Job responsibilities

Support the General Manager in the development and provision of a comprehensive, high quality, patient centred care service within the resources available. The post has key functions: responsibility for the improvement and delivery of targets related to inpatient and outpatient speciality management within the Directorate of Surgery. Responsible in delivering performance against financial and activity targets; leading the development and delivery of service strategy; organisational development and the management of risk within the Directorate of Surgery.

  • Ensuring clear communication providing and receiving complex sensitive information.
  • Uses specialist knowledge across a range of work procedures to implement robust policies for own work area and proposes changes as applicable, to deliver business objectives and agreed targets.
  • Collaborating with Service Leads, Operational Manager, Matrons and the Clinical Director to ensure sound operational management of all areas with robust systems that are continuously improved.
  • Lead the delivery of operational performance of specialities within the speciality and acute medicine directorate to achieve delivery of national and local targets, the development and delivery of improvement plans and reengineering of roles/models of care.
  • In liaison with the General Manager and the directorate Financial Business Partner agree and deliver against financial and activity profiles for relevant specialities, identify risks and implement and review risk reduction strategies.
  • Responsible for departmental budget and lead Implementation and review robust systems and processes so that speciality budgets are effectively managed and financial balance is achieved, within Trust budgetary rules, Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions.
  • Responsible as line manager for HR function and implement HR and governance strategies and policies within relevant specialities in order to achieve compliancy with Trust policies and procedures, best practice, relevant legislation and regulatory provisions.
  • Form links with the Bed Management team to ensure effective use of available resources for the directorate.
  • Uses analytical skills involving complex facts or situations and judgement to interpret comparisons and benchmarking.
  • The post holder will work independently to decide how results or service improvement are best achieved referring where necessary to external reference points.
  • Responsible for the improvement and delivery of targets by ensuring effective and efficient operation of the specialities within the acute and specialist medicine directorate.
  • Plan and organise a broad range of complex activities including the formulation of plans.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager in managing staff within the directorate, including regularly reviewing establishments and skill mix in collaboration with clinical leads, Matrons and the Clinical Director to ensure organisational efficiency and clinical excellence.
  • Implement and review robust arrangements within relevant specialities to effectively deal with emergencies, in line with Trust policy, including elective and emergency admissions, major emergencies and mechanical failures.
