The Head of Research and Development (R&D) is responsible for developing and delivering the Trust's R&D strategy, promoting and facilitating the delivery of high quality R&D activity across George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (GEH) in line with Department of Health policy and associated legislation; the implementation of national R&D strategy; and management of the Trust's obligations in relation to the requirements of Research Governance, UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research
The post holder will lead on the strategic development, performance management and delivery of a range of multi-stranded programmes of work and projects to maximise the Trust's engagement in R&D in the region and nationally to increase the amount and quality of academic and clinical research activity.

Main duties of the job
In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operations Officer and Associated Chief Medical Officer for Research the post-holder will:
- lead on the governance processes and support the delivery of the strategic and business development planning of research activities within the Trust
- lead the development, implementation, and ongoing management of R&D This will include working with partner organisations
- develop local key performance indicators for R&D activity across the Trust
- manage performance of R&D activity across the Trust against national and locally developed key performance indicators
- Line manages the team leaders and other staff as required, involving recruitment, staff appraisal and professional development and absence management
- manage and be accountable for R&D budgets and develop plans to redress variances and achieve financial balance
