Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, innovative and knowledgeable surgical nurse to join our Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) team, fixed term for 12 months to cover maternity leave. This role offers the chance to develop specialist skills in benign UGI patient management, from diagnosis through to treatment and follow up, whilst acting as a vital key worker for patients.

Acting as a core member of the UGI Multidisciplinary Team, you will be supported to develop the skills and competence to become and autonomous expert practitioner, making critical holistic clinical decisions through assessment, monitoring and planning. You will to run independent nurse-led clinics and utilize advanced communication skills to discuss treatment option and offer patient advice. You will coordinate care, facilitate timely investigations, and liaise with other teams to ensure seamless patient pathways.

You will work collaboratively with clinicians and service managers to promote, develop, review and redesign services which are responsive and relevant to patient's needs in line with national and local objectives.

Main duties of the job

The UGI Benign CNS is a key member of the UGl surgical team at WVT. You will work closely with the UGI clinicians, ward teams and administration teams and will bring a unique and holistic approach to patient care, underpinned by your UGI experience and knowledge. You will be expected to ensure high standards of patients care and use your insight to facilitate good patient flow. You will also have the confidence to use advanced communication skills in difficult situations and act as a patient advocate.

Once competent, you will lead and manage UGI nurse-led clinics, including surveillance follow-up for patients with pancreatic cystic lesions and gallbladder polyps, and post-operative reviews for patients undergoing hiatal hernia surgery. This will include providing tailored medication advice, post-discharge follow-up, and early identification of complications. You will also coordinate the Hot Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy pathway, ensuring timely assessment, surgical planning, and patient education to improve outcomes and reduce delays.

Once competent, you will utilise digital systems to request and review radiological investigations, sign off results, escalate abnormalities to the appropriate clinician, and maintain surveillance databases. You will support the UGI team with Goverencne issues, proactively reviewing incidents and concerns, cascading relevant learning to continually improve patient experience and patient outcomes.
