The Named Nurse will lead on the safeguarding of children and the promotion of their welfare within the Trust. They will be responsible for assuring the Trust Board that a high quality safeguarding service is being provided within WVT NHS Trust.

The Named Nurse role is to seek to improve the health outcomes for children and families by the promotion of innovative practice and collaborative working across our multi-agency arrangements, stimulating the awareness of health needs and influencing policies that affect health and the facilitation of health enhancing activities.

The role involves providing highly specialist advice and clinical support to staff employed and commissioned by the Trust, maintaining appropriate documentation and records. To facilitate and provide a culture of safeguarding support via safeguarding supervision and training whilst being a source of knowledge in the area of safeguarding children.

Main duties of the job

Leadership / Clinical Responsibilities

  1. Provision of professional leadership and expertise
  • Provide expert advice and support to the Trust Board and the Directors on strategic matters relating to safeguarding children.
  • Advise the Trust Board, through the Executive Director, on their responsibilities in relation to safeguarding children and the actions they need to take to ensure that the Trust meets performance indicators relating to safeguarding.
  • Advise the Board on the coordination and delivery of safeguarding children services
  • Provide expert advice to the managers of all services, on safeguarding children
  • Ensure that the Board, and Directors are kept informed of the implications of new government guidance on safeguarding for the provision of services.
  • Advise the Board on any safeguarding deficiencies within the Trust and develop action plans for managing any risks identified.
  • To develop systems which enhance multi-agency / partnership working to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
  • To write, update and implement Trust policies, procedures and protocols in conjunction with other key safeguarding staff and ensure they reflect both evidence based changes in practice and those brought about by legislation/new guidance.
  • To establish and maintain effective liaison and working relationships with other areas of the health economy and partnership agencies such as social services, police, education and the voluntary sector
