Assistant Medical Secretary - Surgical Specialties

Job summary

The purpose of this role is to provide support to the Medical Secretaries and Consultants within the Surgical Specialties Directorate (General Surgery, Urology, Breast, Vascular), working on your own initiative using knowledge, skills and experience to manage and prioritise workload independently in accordance with operational standards and protocols. The main aspect of the role will be audio typing clinical correspondence in adherence with standard turnaround times.

Main duties of the job

Type correspondence, clinic letters, medical reports, etc using digital dictation and transcribe ensuring workload is prioritised, produced in a timely manner and to an agreed standard.

When covering offices, ensure all patients' investigation reports are reviewed, shown to the Consultant or other member of the team, as appropriate.

To cover, where appropriate, for Medical Secretaries when on annual leave/sick.

To cover, where appropriate for validation, updating patient tracking list and data quality.

  • RSA Stage 2/3 or equivalent Medical Word processing skills

  • Ability to provide cover for consultant secretaries
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and manage workload without supervision
  • Ability to meet tight time schedules and deadlines
  • Previous experience dealing with the public
  • Previous secretarial experience or equivalent

Desirable

  • Previous NHS/Healthcare experience
