Job summary
An exciting new opportunity has been created within our immunology team at Wye Valley Trust in Hereford for a full time permanent clinical scientist with a background in clinical immunology.
We are a small team with big ambitions. The immunology laboratory is part of our blood sciences department which also includes clinical chemistry, haematology, blood transfusion and point of care. There is cross working between the sections which deliver over 5 million test results per annum for Herefordshire and Powys GPs as well as local hospitals and our ICS partners.
The primary purpose of this post is to provide day-to-day clinical oversight of the immunology laboratory including interpretation of results and advice on the appropriate selection and use of immunology tests. Responsibilities include reviewing results, offering interpretative comments and ensuring clear communication of complex test results. The role also entails scientific and technical duties such as developing new assays, participating in equipment evaluation and ensuring quality is maintained to ISO15189 standards. Furthermore the post-holder is expected to support the training and development of immunology colleagues through engagement in research, teaching and training of staff and maintenance of continuing professional development activities.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities:
- To provide a clinical interpretative advisory service to clinicians and General Practitioners ensuring any barriers to understanding, due to the highly complex nature of the results, are appropriately addressed.
- Under the supervision of the Consultant Clinical Scientist discuss and provide advice for clinical staff on the interpretation of complex immunology results e.g. advise on differential diagnoses and monitoring.
- To advise on the appropriateness and choice of specialist diagnostic tests for immune-based diseases, the method of requesting, sample handling and result reporting.
Scientific and Technical
To participate in the development and provision of the scientific immunology service in accordance with national guidelines and other markers of good clinical practice.
To regularly develop and evaluate new assays and methods involving judgements on the best assays available for the diagnosis of complex immunological diseases.
To regularly participate in the evaluation and selection of equipment and prepare associated reports for business cases and be actively involved in the tendering process for new equipment.
