Job summary

Following significant investment into Community Child Health Services in Herefordshire, our nursing team is expanding. Wye Valley NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced Nurse to work as part of our multi-disciplinary team at the Child Development Centre.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist role will involve using advanced clinical skills and expert knowledge to assess, diagnose and support the needs of children and young people with complex needs who are known to the Child Development Centre.

Training and professional development will be offered as part of your continuing development, and to help you meet the skills, knowledge and competencies required for this post. This post does require the applicant to hold the V300 Non Medical Prescribing qualification and registration with the NMC. However, if the applicant does not hold the V300 qualification they will still be considered if they meet all other aspects of the person specification, but they will need to complete this as part of a development post (Band 6 to 7).

Main duties of the job

  • Able to act as an independent practitioner and be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including a defined clinical caseload and education and training on health, developmental and behavioural issues of Children and Young People with SEND
  • To have specialist knowledge base on paediatric SEND health conditions and maintain a caseload, demonstrating highly specialist clinical assessment, autonomous practice and treatment skills
  • To assess needs and plan intervention and support for children and families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
  • To work autonomously to provide health and behavioural advice to patients and their carers in community clinics, the patients' own home, care homes and acute hospital settings.
  • In accordance with a diagnosis provide specialist advice in keeping with NICE guidance, and local guidelines.
  • Independently prescribe in line with NMC standards of prescribing.
  • Review children following changes in medication by paediatricians and refer back to paediatricians as required.
  • Ability to manage own time, deciding priorities for work and balancing other patient-related and professional demands.
  • Ability to use own initiative but to recognise the limits of experience and competence.
