Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Public Health Midwife within maternity services at Wye Valley Trust Hereford. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to join the team.

The post has been designed to provide support to the Public Health Midwife and the Infant feeding team. They will support the Implementation of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards within the Maternity service.

The successful applicant will act as an expert practitioner / role model, providing professional leadership and support to midwives in order to improve development of clinical skills, to develop and maintain clinical practice knowledge and skills in regard to Public Health and Infant feeding.

They will support the Midwifery led Tongue tie service and the Smoking cessation service.

Main duties of the job

This role will support the current Public Health Midwife in their role.

  • The post holder will work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team and local stakeholders to improve and protect health and wellbeing, and improve the health of the poorest families (Department of Health 2015) Contributing to improving the population's health and reducing health inequalities within maternity services
  • Key work will focus upon improving outcomes of women with modifiable risk factors such as smoking, obesity and breastfeeding, developing and implementing processes to secure a year on year increase in uptake of immunization.
  • It is anticipated that the post holder will possess the requisite skills and abilities to lead and audit the outcomes of tongue tie service.
  • It is anticipated that the post holder will possess the requisite skills and abilities to lead and audit the outcomes of the in-house Maternity led smoking cessation service.
  • The post holder will support the current Public Health Midwife on all aspects of Infant Feeding within the Division. This is a strategic role in developing policy and practice on infant feeding within the Maternity Service but liaising with partner organisations e.g. Health visiting. A significant part of the role will be to assist in the project management of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation process.

Education & Qualification

Essential

  • NMC Registered Midwife
  • Relevant Diploma/Degree or equivalent
  • Additional qualification or relevant experience equivalent to that of a masters.
  • Mentorship & further relevant study & expertise
  • Awareness of local and national policies and strategies, In Public Health, and Maternity
  • Evidence of further studies/experience in infant feeding o
  • Evidence of experience of supporting breastfeeding dyads experiencing complex feeding difficulties

Desirable

  • Tongue Tie/ Frenulotomy training
  • Public Health Qualifications/ experience or study days
  • Smoke cessation training
  • Motivational interviewing training

Skills Knowledge & Abilities

  • Previous experience within relevant clinical area of practice
  • Previous experience in teaching/ training
  • Experience of analysing public Health data to identify optional ranges and influence local decisions
  • Promoting quality improvement
  • Substantial experience to include experience of infant feeding support
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Developed Communication style which is effective, motivational and supportive, working with people who have barriers and opposition to change behaviour

  • Be working towards or maintaining certification as IBCLC
  • Support Paediatric/Neonatal staff when a newborn baby is admitted to the ward/ Children's Ward with a feeding problem
