Job summary

Applications are invited to join our talented team in the Emergency Department of Hereford County Hospital, with the opportunity for CESR support.

"This is one of the most friendly and supportive workplaces that I have worked at. It is an amazing place to improve and grow as a clinician because of great emphasis being put into personal development. There are numerous opportunities to learn new clinical skills and regular teachings, and an overall culture of encouraging one to evolve and accomplish short and long term goals. The best thing about this job is that I feel I am working with friends, rather than colleagues" current SD

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a team whose main aim is to ensure that the highest standards of Emergency Medicine are delivered by the department. You will be part of the team responsible for resuscitating critically ill medical, surgical and trauma patients both young and old as well as working in the Majors, Ambulatory and Minor Injuries areas.

You should be prepared to see any patient with any condition. Part of this role is to recognise and manage rapidly those who may be unwell or require timely resuscitation. You will be expected to determine which patients can be safely discharged, with or without further follow up, and to recognise those who need further investigation and admission under the care of a speciality team.

There will be an expectation that you will require senior input with certain patients, and you will be able to obtain that help rapidly and effectively.

About us

Watch our video which will show you why so many doctors want to work here at Wye Valley NHS Trust wwwemployers.bmj.com/1/wye-valley-nhs-trust.html

We are a progressive and forward looking trust with ambitious plans to improve quality and integrate patient pathways through close collaborative working with our partners to deliver the quality of care we'd want for our family and friends.

More than 3,000 people work for the Trust - they tell us it's a great place to work, blending the busyness of a DGH with the benefits of working in a beautiful rural and unspoilt county like Herefordshire.

The fact that we're rural hasn't hampered our ambitious plans to be the best we can. We're a "fast follower" in the NHS Digital Clinical IT Exemplar programme, we've just signed a multi-million pound deal with Philips to ensure we have the latest radiology equipment and we're in the process of having three new wards built.

We can offer a great work-life balance and have a fine tradition of working with staff to help them achieve their full potential.

Russell Hardy, Trust Chairman: "The strength of the Trust is its amazing staff; a great place to work, a great place to develop your career and a great place to reach your potential."

Our values - Care, Accountability, Respect and Excellence - are at the heart of all we do. We believe in providing the right care in the right place at the right time...all the time.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Middle grade doctors are on site 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with consultants on call at all times.

Due to the nature of the speciality you need to possess not only excellent clinical skills but also managerial and teaching skills. The role includes supporting and teaching both junior medical and nursing staff, Quality Improvement and ensuring the smooth running of the department by allocating your resources appropriately. You will be able to demonstrate flexibility and a team working approach - being a team player and good communicator is key to the functioning of the department.

This is an excellent post for those wishing to pursue a career in emergency medicine as well as those who would like to consolidate their skills and knowledge before embarking on a career in general practice, acute medicine or surgical specialties. If you are taking postgraduate examinations you will be supported and encouraged to attend courses relevant to your chosen career path. This is an ideal opportunity to gain senior experience before undertaking a training rotation in a supportive clinical environment.

All doctors within the department have mentors to support them in their career and personal development. At commencement of the post there will be an induction to the Trust and department and there is a weekly teaching programme for specialty doctors which is specifically tailored.
