Job summary

The post provides excellent medical experience, teaching, and opportunities for learning. The post's scheduled hours conform to guidance on junior doctors' hours.

The hours of work will be Monday to Friday 09.00-17.00 with no on call commitment, however there would be an opportunity for on call, and for an element of weekend working in the future, if the successful candidate would prefer to be involved.

Main duties of the job

DUTIES OF POST

  1. Day to day supervision of care of the stroke unit's in-patients, under the direction of the locum/visiting consultant
  2. Occasional involvement with thrombolysis for acute stroke and support of the stroke CNS team in the Emergency Department.
  3. Supervision and teaching of FY1s.
  4. Completing electronic discharge summaries.
  5. Assistance in outpatient clinics and investigation sessions as directed by the consultant.
  6. Communication with general practitioners, patients and relatives / carers
  7. Assessment of patients in other wards and departments at the County Hospital and giving advice when requested.
  8. Participation in the postgraduate activities of the department of medicine and in medical audit.
  9. Teaching of nurses, visiting medical students.
  10. No fixed research commitment is expected, but research will be encouraged and facilities for it made available whenever possible.
  11. Participation in the audit programme of the department of medicine.
  12. The junior doctor accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, at the request of his/her particular consultant, in consultation, where practicable with his/her colleagues, both senior and junior.
  13. You must be aware of and put into practice The Health and Safety procedures relevant for each ward or department in which you are required to work.

Job responsibilities

THE STROKE SERVICE

There is a combined stroke unit based on Wye Ward. We have 6 HASU beds and 20 ASU and rehab beds within the same location. There are stroke specialist nurses, a research practitioner and a full multidisciplinary team who work together with daily consultant rounds and MDT meetings.

The consultants provide a rapid access neurovascular clinic during weekdays, and there is a neuroradiology meeting. There is an early supported stroke discharge team and a community stroke rehabilitation team

The service is currently in band B of the national clinical audit (SSNAP).

The Trust are due to launch a new workforce model which includes, Clinical Nurse Specialists, AHP Consultants, Pharmacists, Clinical Fellows and Physicians Associates to support the Consultant workforce in partnership with Worcester Acute Trust.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

You will be facilitated in developing your career and in particular your skills in stroke management. Opportunities in acute medicine and outpatients can be made available if required. The hospital is currently developing out of programme training posts.

The postgraduate centre, containing the medical library, lecture theatre and meeting rooms, is at the County Hospital, and accommodates a comprehensive range of postgraduate meetings and lectures. All medical staff are expected to take an active part in postgraduate activities. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of junior medical staff and visiting medical students and of nurses and other paramedical staff.

The department of medicine sets aside one half-day each week for postgraduate teaching and medical audit. Activities include a weekly clinical case conference, regular radiology and audit meetings, seminars and bedside teaching for FY1s and middle grade staff, (separately or jointly according to topic). All junior staff in the department are expected to participate fully in these activities.

Regular bedside and tutorial teaching sessions are given to FY1s and CMTs preparing for MRCP.

Advice on postgraduate education and career counselling may be obtained from the postgraduate clinical tutor, and also any of the consultant staff would be pleased to offer help and advice.

The FY1 posts are approved pre-registration appointments.

Study leave is available for recognised courses in accordance with the regulations.
