Job summary
To work as a Medical Laboratory Assistant required for a busy Blood Sciences Reception. The job will be based at the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick and requires the successful candidate to work flexibly within the service needs which includes working extended days, weekends, bank holiday and carry out duties to ensure a 24/7 service - Monday to Sunday. The role may also involve travel to the other 4 Black Country Pathology Service sites when required.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will be an efficient and flexible member of the Reception area team providing a high quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory.
To undertake general Specimen Reception duties including the receipt, sorting, organisation and data entry for pathological specimens submitted to the Department for investigation.
To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Directorate especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality.
To receive, sort and organise pathological samples sent from a variety of sources including all areas from the Trust and General Practitioners for investigation.
Take part in the specimen entry process using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) (Winpath). Ensure that all samples / request forms are correctly matched and fulfil the specimen acceptance criteria of the Directorate. Highlight any discrepancies to a senior member of staff.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in a busy environment alongside a team of Consultants, Scientists andsupport staff.
Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment would be advantageous although full training and support relevant toyour level of experience will be given to the successful applicant.
Aspects of sample reception and pre analytical treatment of samples, including referral out of samples, and general laboratory duties together with direct support of technical and scientific staff will be required to support the service to the department.

The employee's working hours will be averaged per week, working more or fewer hours in any given week, provided that the average is maintained over a period of time on a rota.
