Job summary
Clinical Teaching Fellows will form part of the Undergraduate Teaching team delivering clinical hospital based education to 3rd, 4th and 5th Year medical students from the University of Birmingham and Aston Medical Schools and clinical hospital based education to 1st and 2nd year physician assistant students from the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Keele University. All full and comprehensive understand of the Mbchb curriculum working in an NHS hospital is essential.
CTFs will work 80% education with a 20% clinical allocation in a chosen specialty.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) will deliver bedside teaching, large group lectures, small group teaching sessions and simulation sessions to all medical and physician assistant students placed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust in accordance to the specific universities curriculum. CTFs will assist with OSCE preparation and examination.
CTFs work within a teaching team consisting of doctors, nurses and physician assistants offering full team support to each other and all students along with full support to the administration team.
CTFs will also offer mentoring and pastoral support to allocated groups of students.

- Undergraduate EducationTo contribute to the delivery of clinical teaching of undergraduate medical students attached to New Cross Hospital.All appointees are expected to assist with the organisation and delivery of year 3, 4, and 5 OCSEs held at the trust.
- Physician Associate StudentsCTFs will also deliver teaching to Physician Assistant Students on their placements.To be familiar with the Electronic curriculum for Physician Assistant students and to be available to facilitate students self-directed learning.
- EducationAppointees will generally have 8 sessions allocated for education. The number of students varies throughout the year. The teaching fellow will deliver teaching to different groups of 3rd, 4th and 5th year students, helping them to achieve clearly defined learning objectives. Clinical Teaching Fellows fully support the Year 3 programme offering bedside and small group teaching on a weekly basis. The 4th year students are attached to various medical and surgical specialties, clinical teaching fellows will also support year 4 students by meeting weekly. The Year 5 curriculum is predominately delivered by the Undergraduate Teaching Team. During August there are no students Clinical Teaching Fellows will use this time to finalise any audit and research projects and spend their time on clinical activities, covering holiday absences, attending relevant operating sessions and out-patient clinics.
- SimWardLeading and participating in SimWard sessions is encouraged.
- Certificate / Diploma in Postgraduate EducationThe post-holder will be expected to embark on or continue further training in medical education with a view to achieving a Certificate in Postgraduate Medical Education which will be funded by the Faculty of Undergraduate Education. A Certificate in Medical Education course is run at the Birmingham University Medical School.There will be opportunities to present at national, and international medical education meetings.
- Clinical ExperienceIn order to provide further training in preparation for application for training posts, a clinical attachment will be arranged to provide further experience in a specialty to be agreed at interview. Further clinical experience appropriate to the Fellows anticipated specialty (e.g Attendance at clinics, ward rounds and/or investigation sessions) will also be negotiated.In conjunction with colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.
- Research, Audit & Clinical GovernanceParticipation in research or an audit project would be strongly encouraged related either to medical education or medical or surgical specialties with a view to presenting at national meetings and in publications. The successful candidate is expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance.
- AccountabilityThe appointee will be professionally responsible to The Clinical Director of the specialty to which the appointee is attached and managerially responsible to the Director NHS Teaching Academy, Dr James Bateman.
