Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic and adaptable Band 5 Therapeutic Radiographer to join our work force and be part of a friendly and patient focused Radiotherapy Team.

The Deanesly Centre, based at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, is a paperlite radiotherapy facility equipped with four Elekta HD Linear Accelerators and has a fully integrated Mosaiq network. The department is innovative and has developed the service it delivers to embrace new technology, offering IMRT, VMAT, DIBH (voluntary breath hold and using Elekta ABC), IGRT, SABR, 4DCT/4DCBCT and gynaecological Brachytherapy. This offers plenty of learning and development opportunities for all staff members.

The team includes our dedicated booking team, support workers, assistant practitioners, therapeutic radiographers, advanced practitioners and Consultant Therapeutic radiographers, and provides a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your career with us.

Applicants must have clinical experience within Radiotherapy, be adaptable to support service needs and able to communicate effectively with all members of the Oncology team.

Main duties of the job

To carry out radiotherapy treatments with attention to all aspects of caring for patients being prepared for and undergoing such treatment, working as part of the radiotherapy team. Rotating through the treatment units and CT scanners, and to perform all duties as required.

To assist within a team of radiographers with specific responsibility for areas of quality and development to provide high standards of patient care.

Job responsibilities

PROFESSIONAL

Under supervision from Superintendent and Senior Radiographers:

To assist in the daily organization and running of the relevant unit

To carry out accurate treatment of patients by radiotherapy to include such routine procedures connected with the treatment under the supervision of a senior radiographer.

To assist the senior radiographer with localization, planning and verification procedures including specialised work with contrast media.

To undertake the calculation of treatment sheets and input prescription data onto treatment unit computerized verification system, verifying treatment parameters with medical physicists and consultants when necessary.

To report immediately to the radiographer in charge of the unit any possible discrepancy found on the treatment prescription or any query regarding the interpretation of the prescription, plan or set-up during the initial calculation or at any time during the course of treatment.

Observe and report changes in the medical condition of patients to the radiographer in charge of the unit at the time. To re-assure patients, advise on care of reactions and give information and explanations about the treatment during and after the course as appropriate. To administer / dispense drugs to patients under supervision from senior staff.

To carry out routine daily checks of equipment ensuring that any fault or variation from the normal is accurately recorded and reported immediately to the radiographer in charge.

To carry out clinic duties in treatment planning clinics and out-patients clinics.

To demonstrate radiotherapy techniques and explain the basis of radiotherapy theory and side-effects, to medical physics students, medical students, nurses and other visitors to the department.

To maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, tidy and safe order, reporting any malfunction or damage immediately.

To liaise with other members of staff and other departments to ensure the care and well-being of patients throughout their treatment, working as part of a Multi-disciplinary team.

To fully participate in the clinical rota, including shift patterns and on call rota.

To comply with all statutory, Trust and Directorate Policies and procedures and to play a part in the development of such policies and procedures, particularly those relating to ISO 9000:2008 , governance, risk management and other quality initiatives

To contribute to clinical audit and all clinical governance issues as required

To demonstrate a continuous process of professional and personal development in order to develop own and others skills and be aware of the changing needs of the service.
