Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics - Lower Limb

Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established team at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. We are a very successful department, with twin site working at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital (Trauma and elective sites).

The post is for a Consultant Lower Limb Surgeon with specialist interest in Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. The candidate must have a Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellowship to add to the existing complement of consultants.

An additional Trauma fellowship and experience is desirable. The candidate will also be expected to provide support in complex lower limb trauma as per departmental need.

The current on-call rota is 1:10 rota, with a 7- day working commitment. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (Tr & Orth) / or equivalent qualification who are on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or who will be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT/CESR at the time of interview.

The post holder will be expected to provide a General Trauma and Orthopaedic Service, with a specialist interest in primary hip and knee arthroplasty. A lower limb arthroplasty fellowship is essential. An additional fellowship is desirable. Flexible working will be required to fully utilise hospital facilities such as theatres and out patients. The post holder will also be expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to participate in audit and clinical governance activities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The normal duties of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics would be undertaken. This includes ward rounds, clinics, administration, teaching and inpatient support to colleagues and in addition to take part in the rolling trauma rota.

The trauma service is currently covered by a 1 in 10 week rolling rota encompassing 2 Consultants.

Elective lower limb work and Trauma attracts 10 PAs and additional elective activity a further 2 PAs.

The post has secretarial support which includes a medical secretary shared with 1 other consultant and further typing support, on-site office facilities will be provided.

On-Call Arrangements and Cover of Patients

As we work split sites we have two consultants on call 7 days a week.

Consultant A undertakes Fracture Clinic in the morning and Trauma theatre in the afternoon.

Consultant B has Trauma Theatre in the morning followed by ward rounds in the afternoon. Ward rounds entail reviewing every orthopaedic patient including paediatrics, on a daily basis and liaising with the named consultant when required for elective and trauma patients. Shared care is provided for patients with other specialities including with paediatrics where required.

Weekend On-Call = Friday 17:00 Monday 17:00

Weekday On-Call = Monday 17:00 Friday 17:00

Routine work commitments are suspended whilst a consultant is on-call allowing trauma commitments.

The Cannock Chase Elective Hub patients have registrar ward rounds 7 days per week, twice a day from a 24/7 on-call non-resident T&O registrar. There is also FY2 on-call on-site 24/7 for the site and an anaesthetic registrar resident on site 24/7. Consultant A and B would then be contacted if required.

The outline timetable and the detail will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate. The days outlined may change due to theatre and clinic availability
