Job summary

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Senior Theatre Practitioner to join our busy Cardiothoracic Operating Theatre at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated registered nurse or ODP with cardiothoracic theatre experience to make a real impact in delivering high-quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

As a senior theatre practitioner, you will support the perioperative team in delivering safe and effective patient care during scrub, anaesthetic, and recovery roles. You will act as a team leader, mentoring junior staff and coordinating theatre lists to ensure the safe organisation of theatre. You will contribute to quality improvement initiatives and uphold infection control and patient safety standards. You will work closely with the theatre manager to provide a seamless link between senior colleagues and the wider theatre team.

To practice at all times within the appropriate Code of Professional Conduct

To ensure at all times care provided to patients is delivered in a professional, courteous and empathetic manner and respecting the different cultural background of colleagues, clients, visitors and patients.

To ensure good communication links and co-operation exist between staff in the area and other health professionals, other disciplines and departments thereby ensuring a seamless service for patients and their families.

To undertake / participate in nursing research appropriate to the speciality. To be a role model by practicing alongside the Theatre Team, acting as a mentor/clinical supervisor to the team as required, to ensure a professional and patient centered approach.

To maintain and improve knowledge and expertise in current developments and future trends in relation to perioperative theatre practice and management.

To help create and maintain a positive learning environment for all grades of staff, and to participate in the setting of learning objectives.

To participate in the development of new innovative patient care techniques.

Co-ordinate the planning of care to patients paying due attention to staffing levels, skill mix, competence, experience and training within the team. Manage a theatre area / client group to ensure all statutory standards and Trust procedures are implemented and maintained at all times thereby ensuring the safety of all aspects of the environment.

To contribute to the planning of duty rotas and organise annual leave in such a way as to ensure continuity of care and safety for patients and staff.

To ensure that any incidents, accidents, complaints or other undue occurrences are dealt with in accordance with current policy.

Ensure the equipment used or stored within the department is in good working order, liaising with appropriate agencies as necessary. Ensure adequate and economical levels of stock items are maintained.

To be aware of the need for economical use of resources and to assist with the efficient management within the clinical area.

To actively participate in appraisal in conjunction with Theatre Speciality Manager to ensure development and continuous updating in professional and managerial practices and to conduct appraisals. To assist in the identification of training needs for all staff and the provision of adequate training / development in line with those identified needs.

To undertake statutory annual training as required by the Trust, to ensure compliance of other members of the team as appropriate. To attend such courses / lectures / training as indicated by the needs of the service and within the limitations of the service and as required by the post.

To provide, effective leadership and motivation of junior and senior staff, developing and maintaining good working relationships with other disciplines, encouraging teamwork approach to patient care.

To be responsible for setting of the highest standards and quality of care with the resources available and to review and monitor these on a continuous basis through the processes of audit.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and legible nursing and other theatre records / documentation. Following NMC/HCPC standards for record keeping.

In the absence of the person with continuing responsibility to be responsible for the custody of drugs, checking controlled drugs and reporting all discrepancies as appropriate.

To take a lead role in the teaching and supervision of both pre and post registration students and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

To take leadership for a specific area of responsibility as discussed and agreed with the Head Nurse as appropriate
