Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Neonatal Support Worker to join our well established, supportive team. As a Neonatal Support Worker you will work together with the members of the Nursing and Midwifery team to provide a high standard of care to our Mothers and babies. Following training you will be competent to undertake and record designated observations and clinical procedures under the supervision of the Nursing/Midwifery team. In addition the post holder will inform and educate women in all aspects of newborn care and postnatal health education.Situated in the Women's and Neonatal Centre of New Cross Hospital , The Neonatal Unit is a 26 bedded multi professional unit providing care for all babies who develop intensive, high dependency and special care needs health care needs. The philosophy of the ward is to support the family in caring for their baby and family integrated care is promoted.

Main duties of the job

The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will work together with the members of the midwifery team to provide a high standard of care to patients. He / she will be competent to undertake and record designated observations and clinical procedures, once trained and declared competent in that task, under the direction and guidance of the Midwifery staff. They will ensure appropriate equipment is available and support the midwife. In addition the post holder will inform and educate women in all aspects of Ante Natal, intra & Post Natal Health Education.

To provide a high standard and quality of care to babies in accordance with Trust clinical policies, procedures and guidelines.

To attend to the physical needs of babies , supporting families with the daily care of their baby.

To observe baby and report to the nurse/midwife responsible for the care, any signs of comfort, distress or concern.

To assist with admission, orientation and discharge of babies in accordance with agreed policies.

To take emergency action as necessary to safeguard babies and notify the nurse/midwife of the situation as soon as possible.

Encourage and support women with breast feeding. Be trained in accordance with the UNICEF baby friendly best practice guidelines.

To support women who have chosen to formula feed.

To assist in the monitoring and restocking of supplies.

To take newborn/maternal blood samples following appropriate training.

To maintain accurate contemporaneous legible records.

To be competent in tube feeds on neonates

To carry out any other reasonable duties as may be required, which are commensurate with the post, to meet the needs of the service.
