Consultant Physicist (Head of Radiotherapy Physics)

Job summary

Due to the retirement of the present post holder, we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced consultant clinical scientist to become our next head of radiotherapy physics service. You will lead a friendly team of around 20 clinical scientists and technologists that prides itself with placing the patient at the heart of everything they do. You will also become part of the senior management team for the wider Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department.

You should have proven scientific and leadership skills as you will be responsible for the strategic direction, R&D and day to day delivery of the radiotherapy physics service. You will be an experienced Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in radiotherapy physics able to provide highly specialist, advice to the Trust utilising your expertise and experience in the resolution of complex or unusual problems in the delivery of the service. Scientific and leadership skills are essential for the safe and effective delivery of radiation treatment to patients.

Your key responsibilities will be to manage staff and resources within the radiotherapy physics section, to ensure that radiotherapy treatments are delivered accurately and safely by the provision of excellent radiotherapy physics support and to develop the radiotherapy physics service in line with current national developments..

It is also desirable that you should be a certificated (or working towards) Radiation Protection Adviser.

Main duties of the job

You will oversee and lead the radiotherapy physics service which is part of a multi disciplinary team (including Oncology and Radiotherapy) delivering EBRT and brachytherapy services . The radiotherapy service has ISO9001 certification and has close collaboration with the radiotherapy centres within the region, headed by the West Midlands Cancer Alliance. The Trust currently has a portfolio of four Elekta Versa HD clinical linear accelerators , plus one non-clinical training linear accelerator. The section plans over 2000 patients per year and a new therapy planning system has recently been procured to replace the existing TPS. Commissioning of this will be a major task for the section over the coming months. Supporting software includes Pinnacle TPS, Mosaiq Record and Verify system, Prosoma Virtual Simulator, Oncentra Masterplan Brachytherapy TPS, IMSure QA Software and Sun Nuclear ArcCHECK verification system. ProsomaCore secondary MU check software . The department also supports the provision of Flexitron HDR brachytherapy and XStrahl superficial x-ray services. The section is an accredited training centre.

The post is responsible to the head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering , and you will be responsible for strategic service development , leadership of the section, manage the budget allocation for pay and non-pay of the section, manage radiation protection within the section.
