Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to participate in the delivery of a single integrated, high quality Microbiology service to the Trusts and GPs in the Black Country.

Applications are invited for a suitably qualified Trainee Biomedical Scientist to work in our busy Microbiology Department on a fixed term contract for 18 months. Our forward looking and dynamic department employs modern equipment and automated processes, to deliver a quality service for all current and future users.

Main duties of the job

Black Country Pathology Service - Trainee Biomedical Scientist

Educated to BSc level and working towards HPC registration, you will be responsible for the performance of diagnostic tests on a wide range of potentially hazardous materials to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes.

Subject to contract and competency assessment, to work flexibly within the service needs which include, extended working day, weekends and Bank Holidays.

To certify the analytical and technical validity of investigations, and liaise with medical and scientific staff of the department, other BMS staff within all pathology departments, nursing and medical staff within the trust, GP surgeries, patients, and other NHS Trusts.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations in all sections of the laboratory (Microbiology). This will include the both bacteriology and virology.

To follow the standard operating procedures.

To undertake routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments.

To plan and organise their work within the demands of the team.

To communicate patient results by telephone.

To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.

To carry out corrective action when the quality control procedures indicate loss of performance.

To prepare reagents required for laboratory investigations.

To report any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.

To ensure the reporting of low level of reagents to supervisory staff.

Support initiatives for improved resource management

Trainee BMSs rotate between all sections of Microbiology under the direct supervision of HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with the aim of gaining knowledge and practical skills in all aspects of clinical Microbiology. The overall aim is to gain registration with the HCPC by completion of the IBMS/HCPC Registration portfolio during their training period.
