Principal Clinical Scientist (Nuclear Medicine)

Job summary

The post holder will provide scientific support for the day to day provision of nuclear medicine services, including line management of other scientific and technical staff. The key responsibilities of the post are to undertake quality assurance, provision of scientific advice and radiation protection services in support of the use of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis and therapy in the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and other sites as per contracts. The range of equipment concerned includes all radionuclide measuring equipment for patient dose determination and environmental control, radiopharmacy and associated aseptic facilities and gamma cameras for patient imaging.

As the Lead specialist the post holder will act as the lead for radiation protection and radioactive waste management for nuclear medicine, and the Sealed Source Custodian.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible to the Head of Nuclear Medicine for the work and service development carried out in the subdivision in the field of Nuclear Medicine, and associated Radiation Protection and Quality Assurance, deputising as required.

To be responsible for the line management of staff within the section as required by the Head of Nuclear Medicine.

To work as a Medical Physics Expert in the area of Nuclear Medicine.

To provide expert advice on radiation safety to the Trust and external customers. To be responsible for continually updating specialist knowledge of radiation protection issues in order to act as lead radiation protection officer for nuclear medicine.

To be responsible for the completion of Nuclear Medicine Quality Assurance programmes on the gamma camera and other complex items of equipment and produce relevant reports.

To act as sealed source custodian for radioactive sources (excluding HASS), also covering the role of unsealed source custodian if required.
