Job summary

To care for women whose pregnancies have the potential to be, or are complicated with fetal anomalies, potential genetic disorders past history of genetic disorders or previous complicated pregnancies.

Main duties of the job

To give counselling along with on-going support for women with high-risk pregnancies, fetal abnormalities and following the loss of a baby if needed.

To perform dating scans.

To be able to perform detailed obstetric scanning to look for fetal abnormalities, e.g. Spina bifida.

To be able to confirm intrauterine death.

To monitor and assess complex and high- risk pregnancies, using Doppler when appropriate. To be able to make decisions following assessment and refer to Consultant or take appropriate action.

To be a point of referral for community services.

To provide practical training and assessment to postgraduates and clinicians in basic and advanced obstetric ultrasound.

Participate in, and undertake clinical audit.

Job responsibilities

Experience in caring for high-risk pregnancies.

Experience in antenatal care.

Be able to provide appropriate counselling when necessary.

Experienced in all aspects of fetal medicine.

To provide expert specialist theoretical and practical training in fetal medicine to a range of clinical staff for a variety of recognised qualifications and courses as a significant and ongoing job responsibility. Trainees include Midwives, Student Midwives, Medical Students and Registrars.

Accountable for ones own professional activities using a high degree of autonomy within the limitations of personal experience and skills.

To give expert and specialist advice to a wide range of healthcare professionals.

Must be educated to Certificate level in Obstetric ultrasound as a minimum

Must possess specialist knowledge and expertise through comprehensive accredited theoretical and practical training

Accumulate practical experience. Be willing to embrace change and learn new techniques outside current scope of practice, further enhancing role.

Possess high level of specialist knowledge over a wide range of ultrasound procedures and/or the highest level in-depth expertise in a particular area of ultrasound comparable to a Senior Clinician.

Will need detailed knowledge of anatomy and pathology and the normal variances that can occur.

Must be able to produce comprehensive real time images of the area being examined. Must be able to relate each section of anatomy to its surrounding organs and orientate them correctly. To achieve this one must have accurate hand/eye co-ordination and high level of manual dexterity.

Intense concentration must be used, frequently for long periods of time especially during anomaly scans to look for structural abnormalities, so that no pathology is missed or misdiagnosed, as there is a high risk of litigation linked to obstetrics.

Need to understand the ultrasound equipment and be able to use it effectively to produce the appropriate images safely.

Computer literate with good IT skills, necessary to input data and compile documents.

To attend mandatory study days.

Provide theoretical and practical training to a range of clinical staff for a variety of recognised qualifications and courses is a significant and ongoing job responsibility. Judgment as to trainees

ability to work independently can be difficult as their actions can directly affect patient care. Newly qualified practitioners also require supervision and support so we offer mentorship to less experienced professionals.
