Job summary

This is equivalent to Specialist Registrar grade. It is suitable for individuals who already have experience and training in Medical Microbiology.

The post is for 2 years with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory progress towards MRCP/FRCPath.

The post consists of 3-month placements rotating between New Cross Hospital Wolverhampton and the Manor Hospital Walsall. At Wolverhampton the focus will be on laboratory work, clinical liaison and up to 2 days per week will be spent in general medicine gaining experience for MRCP if the successful applicant does not already have MRCP. At Walsall the focus will be on clinical liaison, infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.

Main duties of the job

Working under consultant supervision:

  • Reviewing patients on the ward with positive blood cultures or other significant results
  • Giving telephone advice
  • Participating in the daily ICCU ward round
  • Taking part in MDTs including OPAT
  • Specific area ward rounds eg NNU
  • Working with the infection prevention nurses on C difficile ward rounds
  • Learning about the management of outbreaks
  • Working with the antibiotic pharmacists on AMS ward rounds
  • Authorisation of laboratory results
  • Laboratory audit
  • Opportunities for teaching various grades of staff
  • Whilst working towards MRCP, 2 days per week during the Wolverhampton placements will be spent working in general medicine at an internal medical trainee (IMT) level.
