Main duties of the job

To work as part of the School Nursing Service's team with professional responsibility to the School Nurse Manager. To work with children and families to provide health education, assess health needs and play and integral part in the Safeguarding agenda.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To assist in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care to ensure evidence-based, high quality packages of care.

To provide advice, information and sign posting on aspects of current public health agenda.

To supervise and participate in the teaching of unqualified staff, including School Nurse Health Care Assistants and pre-registration students.

Ensure that Trust Confidentiality policies are strictly adhered to.

Assist in the planning and implementation and participate of effective health promotion Programmes, to support Trust and Local Authority national and local targets.

To participate in promotional / educational events for the services, dependent on service delivery needs and in agreement with the School Nurse Manager.

To offer and provide training to teachers and school staff.

Support the School Nursing Team by participating in the delivery of screening programmes adhering to national and local policy.

Strive to achieve a harmonious working environment to encourage and develop team working.

To communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with clients and their families colleagues, partner agencies and statutory voluntary organisations.

To participate in and attend staff meetings, and engage in working parties as requested, to ensure timely access to information and be part of the decision-making processes of the service.

To participate in a range of ways to enable self to be up-to-date with events, news and policies within the service and organisation.

To provide cover for absent colleagues within the limitations of the grade.

Undertake an annual personal development review with the School Nurse Manager and agree a Personal Development Plan to ensure that the job description is accurate and reflects any role changes required to meet the needs of the service and identifies any necessary training requirements.

Participate in training and development in line with the Personal Development Plan to ensure personal and service objectives are met.

Undertake training and education that is mandatory as directed by the Trust and Service, to ensure Trust and Service objectives are met.

Plan and participate in induction programmes for new service staff and training programmes for students, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are conveyed.

Assist in the identification of training needs for all staff and the provision of training/development to meet those identified needs.

Promote the development of good practices, piloting projects and actively encourage research based practice as appropriate, to continue to improve service quality.

Undertake/participate in audit/research appropriate to the service in order to monitor, evaluate and improve clinical practice.

Participate in clinical supervision as directed by Trust Policy, to ensure access to on-going personal support.

Report any hazards/incidents to the School Nurse Manager and via the electronic DATIX system to the School Nurse Manager, to ensure a safe working environment is maintained.

Participate in risk assessments as appropriate and report findings to the School Nurse Manager, to ensure Trust policy is complied with.

Ensure that accommodation, equipment and supplies are efficiently, effectively and safely used to promote a clean environment for clients, colleagues and visitors.

To support the development of health related school policies e.g. storage and administration of medicines, emergency procedures e.g. anaphylaxis, asthma attacks etc.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate, contemporaneous, and legible nursing and other service records/documentation, and ensure that these are appropriately filed and safeguarded, to adhere to Trust and Service record keeping guidelines.

To accurately record and report information on client care using computerised and manual recording systems.

Participate in clinical audit as requested by the School Nurse Manager.

Accurately document and report all planned annual leave/sickness as per Trust policy.

Accurately complete time sheets/mileage sheets as per Trust policy.
