Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Pathology IT System Support Officer to work within the Black Country Pathology services (BCPS) IT services to support Pathology IT systems.

BCPS comprises the four pathology laboratories in the Black Country as follows:

The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

The post holder will be a lead desktop and technical specialist within Pathology IT.

The role occupies a key position in managing the effective function of Pathology IT systems within the Trust and external links to other organisation. Will assist the service leads and Pathology IT engineers with the on-going development and support of Pathology and associated computer system such as development of a new Laboratory Information System and providing systems support for the Pathology laboratory system.

This is also a key support role for the Black Country Pathology Services and support will extend to interface support, user account creation, planning and implementation of system upgrades, general day to day system maintenance, including monitoring of system performance, data and production of complex reporting.

The post holder will be a point of contact for matter relating to Pathology IT including faults finding, system configuration issues.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a lead desktop and technical support within Pathology IT.

Providing systems support for the Pathology laboratory system. To perform investigation of IT system malfunction, integration support, small systems advice and policies, together with maintaining general housekeeping and providing management of system user accounts & passwords.

Responsible for maintaining Pathology laboratory system and day to day running of the Pathology IT systems within the Trust and external links to other organisations.

Providing systems support for the Pathology laboratory system. To perform investigation of IT system malfunction, integration support, small systems advice and policies, together with maintaining general housekeeping and providing management of system user accounts & passwords.

Will assist the Path IT systems engineer and managers with the on-going development and support of Pathology and associated computer systems notably Clinisys Winpath Enterprise, SampleNet, Path Manager and ICE Order Comms.

Job responsibilities

Carry out maintenance checks of major pathology system interfaces on a daily basis, liaising with other system administrators as required. Resolution of often, complex issues under own guidance and judgement interacting on a technical level with internal resources and suppliers as needed in pursuit of solutions.

Systematic clearance of log files and manual data input for non-automated interfaces, this includes overall monitoring of DTS system used to transmit Pathology lab results to GP practices.

To understand messaging from Trust systems, to perform overall Pathology reporting and process general I.T requests from the Pathology Clinical Service. To work closely with the Software Development Team or external suppliers to transition smoothly, any related changes to the Pathology system and deploy to Business As Usual live support process.

To provide monitoring and configuration support for DTS messaging regarding complex Read Coding and Sample Coding creation and updates.

To Monitor Pathology system issues and resolution with regular Business reviews on turnaround of Pathology related support cases. In-depth knowledge of the Pathology systems and extensive experience of issues and resolutions together with documenting and reporting these issues for peer and line management review.

To provide monitoring of infrastructure platforms for the Pathology system and escalate any issues to senior management or the appropriate technical services team

To act as contact point for Pathology systems access and seek appropriate authorisation for account creation. In addition, manage and create A&E Locum accounts and liaise with A&E staff. This requires regular reviews with the Pathology Directorate. To enable temporary staff such as Locums with the ability to provision emergency cover as and when required with minimum of setup time and focusing on clinical safety.

Maintain appropriate communication with all levels of internal personnel and external agencies via face-to-face contact, telephone, e-mail or written methods. To lead and/or respond to detailed discussions between various parties including the interpretation and translation of complex technical information depending on the audience involved.

To provide advice and assistance with the specification and installation of Pathology related devices / systems, which could be procured by Trust Departments, Pathology Services or the I.T Department.

To liaise with systems suppliers and computer systems users to facilitate systems integration. To assist with the evaluation of new application software purchased by Pathology department.
