The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust

Staff Nurse - Telford Elective Surgical Hub

The closing date is 23 April 2026

Job summary

An exciting opportunity is available for enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurses to join the Telford Elective Surgery Hub (TESH) at The Princess Royal Hospital.

TESH is a purpose-built unit on the first floor, designed to support patients undergoing planned surgical procedures. The unit comprises 12 admission PODS, 4 theatres, 16 Stage 2 recovery trolleys, a Surgical Admissions Lounge, and the Lofthouse Unit, where staff rotate across all areas to gain broad experience.

The service operates Monday to Friday from 07:15 to 22:00, with occasional weekend working.

Our team works collaboratively across a wide range of surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Gynaecology, Urology, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Colorectal, Ophthalmology, Dental, Head & Neck, and Breast Surgery.

This fast-paced and varied environment involves delivering high-quality pre- and post-operative care, as well as supporting criteria-led discharge. While previous experience in an acute surgical setting is beneficial, it is not essential. We offer comprehensive training and development opportunities to support your growth.

Alongside mandatory and statutory training, we provide an in-house competency programme and access to Trust-wide professional development initiatives.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for assessing, planning and delivering safe, personalised care for patients, working closely with families and the wider care team.
  • Able to provide high-quality nursing care independently, asking for guidance when needed.
  • Notices and acts on changes in a patient's condition, making timely referrals to keep patients safe.
  • Keeps accurate patient records and reports any safety concerns or incidents so learning can be shared.
  • Uses clinical information and decision-support tools to guide safe care, including giving medicines correctly.
  • Supports patients to stay healthy, promotes self-care and always acts professionally, following NMC and Trust standards.

About us

Our Poppy's Promise Commitment

We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team -- clinical or non-clinical -- plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.

We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care.

Effective communication is central to safe and high-quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.

By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values -- ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.
