Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist, with relevant post-registration experience in Cellular Pathology to support the cellular pathology department at The Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Orthopaedic hospital at Oswestry.
Successful candidates may be required to deputise for Senior/ Lead Biomedical Scientists, taking the lead in the main laboratory sections; biopsy transfer/dissection, routine histopathology, immunohistochemistry.
Candidates should meet the full criteria of the Specialist BMS Band 6 Job Description and Person Specification.
You will be expected to work at Royal Shrewsbury hospital and Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt as required.
Main duties of the job
Assist in the provision of a diagnostic service. To understand, organise and perform competently a range of laboratory procedures, either singly or as part of a team, that equate to the training and qualifications of aHealth and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered BMS. You will be required to attain proficiency in the relevant areas of the Cellular Pathology Department.
You will be required to deputise for Senior BMS staff in their absence and take lead responsibility for a specialist section of the department, as required.

Our two Hospitals, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford are just a 30 minute drive apart. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care. The Royal Shrewsbury and Telford cellular pathology department also supports the Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Orthopaedic hospital musculoskeletal histology service.
The Area
We are ideally located between the north and the south, making travelling around the UK extremely easy. As well as being only a short distance from major cities and busy transport links including Birmingham airport, our county also borders with beautiful North Wales which is abundant in outdoor activities, brilliant beaches and thrilling scenery.
Shrewsbury is a beautiful medieval town, rich in heritage and interesting sights. There are an abundance of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and place of interest making it a lovely place to live.
Further training in IBMS Expert roles, histological dissection, will be supported once the successful candidate meets the requirements for enrolment.
To meet increasing demands on the service, our Cellular Pathology department is undergoing a review of workforce as we move towards a 7 day service. Weekend working, on a rotational basis (at most 1 in 4), is a requirement of the role.
