Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic Nurse wishing to develop their leadership skills as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse. You will gain experience in caring for patients with a wide variety of Surgical conditions. Previous surgical experience is essential.

The Surgical Assessment unit is a extremely busy 38 bedded ward with an extremely busy Assessment Area . The Assessment area can have up to 40 patients per day from different specialities and portals.

You will have proven organisational skills with evidence of taking frequent charge of a ward. You will be able to demonstrate leadership skills, be an expert communicator with the ability to work with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

You will be flexible in your approach to the role and respond appropriately to the demands of an ever changing workload. You will also help the Ward Manager in the management and leadership of the ward.

Main duties of the job

You will help and train our junior staff, new starters and agency staff while providing the clinical skills and expertise required for an acute ward.

  • To function as an competent clinical practitioner within theirdesignated clinical area. To deliver direct patient care whilst,coordinating and overseeing nursing/theatre practice.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the delivery of clinical activities duringtheir span of duty.
  • To ensure that there is efficient and effective utilisation of resourcesto deliver optimum quality care to their client group.
  • To deputise for the ward/ department manager in his / her absence,driving forward evidence based practice and taking responsibility forthe supervision of staff and the policies and practices that operatewithin their clinical area.

About us

The Surgical Assessment Unit is a 38 bedded ward providing care predominantly for general surgical patients. We have just opened a Surgical ESDC and we can take a variety of surgical patients who are assessed and will leave the department with a plan of care. The team have motivated staff who believe in making the patient journey a good experience.

The ward has a reputation for delivering high quality of care with a holistic approach. We work closely with a range of multi-disciplinary teams, including the Colorectal Nurse Specialist, IBD Nurse specialist, Bariatric Nurse specialist, Outreach, Nutritional Team and Vascular team.

The Surgical Assessment Unit believes in our Trust values; we are a caring, ambitious team, who are motivated to keep up to date with training and development.
