Lead Biomedical Scientist (Haematology)

Job summary

The post holder will provide the highest source of scientific technical expertise in their laboratory discipline, applying this to the smooth running of the department's sections and in the education and training of all staff.

Providing professional leadership and operational management support to the Pathology Centre Manager, the post holder is accountable for the delivery of a range of services within the Pathology Centre, ensuring efficient and effective management of all resources in order to deliver a safe, high quality and effective service, in an environment of continuous improvement.

The post holder's role includes the effective management of staff (including recruitment, appraisal, training compliance, performance and absence management).

The post holder is accountable for service delivery, ensuring compliance with Regulatory bodies. In addition, responsible for the provision of a high-quality laboratory service, maintaining accreditation with UKAS.

The post holder is also the nominated site manager for the PRH Laboratory, and the Pathology Training Lead.

Main duties of the job

  • To plan and organise complex activities or programmes requiring formulation and adjustment.
  • Plans complex staff rotas and workforce planning
  • Organises a specialist discipline, including workload and staff
  • Plans for introduction of new methods of working
  • To have overall responsibility for the effective management of the service delivery in the Pathology department in the area of responsibility.
  • To take overall responsibility for the efficient and effective management of all available resources within the Pathology service delivery areas.
  • To ensure appropriate systems and work processes and protocols are in place to enable the delivery of high quality, safe services in line with contemporary evidence-based practice and within available resources
  • To analyse and interpret a range of complex information in order to understand the clinical and financial performance of the area of responsibility and to prepare and present options for improvement.
  • To deputise for the Pathology Centre Manager and / or Scientific Lead, as required.
  • Overseeing and monitoring the evaluation of new equipment, techniques and research; advising and overseeing its introduction.
  • Attending departmental meetings as appropriate, providing input into discussions and act as Chair where required.

The successful applicant will be working closely with other members of the Pathology leadership team, across our hospital sites, to deliver a high quality, patient-focused service.

This role requires values-based leadership of a large team of Biomedical Scientists, Support Staff, and Admin team. The individual will also be a key contributor to the overall operational, workforce, and finance performance and strategy of the department, working closely with our other Pathology leaders and wider colleagues.

The post holder is also the nominated site manager for the PRH Laboratory, and the Pathology Training Lead.
