Job summary

The Endoscopy Unit at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital are looking to recruit a Band 3 Nursing Assistant to join their team. We are looking to recruit into part time and full time permanent positions.

Along with your previous experience of working with adults in an Endoscopy or similar environment, candidates should possess GCSE's in Maths and English (grades 9 - 4 or equivalent) and an NVQ 3 in healthcare or willing to work towards this. The successful applicants will have drive and passion with excellent communication and people skills and in return we will be able to offer you support towards your professional development.

The Endoscopy unit is currently open 08:00-18:00 Monday - Sunday, including bank holidays. The unit currently provides a service for both out-patients and in-patients including the following procedures; Endoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, Bronchoscopy and EBUS, PEG insertions, ERCP, EUS and EMR. Patient care, experience and staff well-being are at the forefront of our philosophy. This has been recently demonstrated with us gaining our JAG accreditation and a Values in Practice award for safety.

Main duties of the job

Key duties will include;

  • Assisting the registered nurse in providing skilled and considerate care during the patients admission;
  • Undertake safe monitoring of patients during Endoscopic procedures taking into account the patients specific needs. Providing reassurance to the patient.
  • Providing patient care and monitoring of patients vital signs during recovery to ensure a safe patient discharge;
  • Preparing the equipment and the environment to enable the procedures to be carried out safely and to a high standard. Prepare procedure rooms for endoscopic procedures ensuring all necessary equipment is in good working order.
  • Provide physical and emotional support to patients undergoing endoscopic procedures maintaining their dignity at all times.
  • Undertake the manual cleaning and decontamination of endoscopes post procedure. To prepare endoscopes and accessories for Endoscopic procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining stock levels.
  • Assist with the maintenance of departmental cleanliness as per cleaning checklists

About us

The Endoscopy unit at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital consists of 3 purpose built procedure rooms. The unit delivers the Bowel Cancer screening service alongside the diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service to outpatients and inpatients. We are a training unit, training both medical staff and nurse endoscopists. We are dedicated to helping your ongoing professional development.

The Endoscopy unit provides a 7 day working service. Candidates are welcome to visit the unit to obtain an insight of how the service runs.

We would like to invite you to join our motivated and friendly team who are dedicated to providing a high quality, patient centred Endoscopy service. The team work closely with Gastroenterologists, Colorectal surgeons, Nurse Endoscopists, clinical nurse specialists and other members of the multidisciplinary team. The unit works with each other with the Research and Innovation Team as it is involved in many clinical trials.
