Job summary

The Pathology Laboratories at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust provide laboratory services to several Trusts and the primary care services for a rural population of over 500,000. The clinical biochemist team oversee clinical biochemistry sites at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, The Princess Royal Hospital Telford and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital .

We are entering into a network partnership with our colleagues at North Midlands and Cheshire pathology service and look forward to the breadth of opportunities this will bring. In addition, the Trust has commenced its transformation programme which will see services re-modelled across its two main sites.

We are looking for a Clinical Biochemist to join our team and help us to deliver great care in a rapidly changing environment. Depending upon experience, participation in the Clinical Scientist out of hours support roster may be a requirement. The successful candidate will be expected to work across all sites, as the service requires.

The post is advertised for a Band 8a clinical scientist but applicants that do not meet essential criteria may be employed at Band 7 with progression to 8a on successful completion of RCPath Clinical Biochemistry part 1 written examination, and achievementof competency. Therefore, we welcome applicants with a range of experience and can tailor the job role and responsibilities accordingly.

Main duties of the job

This is a 12 month fixed term contract. You will perform a broad and demanding range of scientific and leadership roles in order to provide and develop Clinical Biochemistry Services for the Trust and service users. You will work with a considerable degree of autonomy and assume responsibility for individual patient outcomes within the overall responsibility of the Lead Clinical Scientist or Chemical Pathologist. You will take responsibility for directing and monitoring the outcome of medium-term service improvement schemes.

About us

The Biochemistry Department has an annual workload of 6.5 million reported tests and its three sites are equipped with Roche Cobas automated systems. There is also a well equipped specialist section covering protein electrophoresis, coeliac screening, and specialist proteins and immunoassays. The department has full accreditation and is an approved training laboratory. Continuous professional development is actively encouraged.

The department provides services to the Trust, the local ICB, Powys Teaching Health Board, Powys Healthcare Trust, and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, amongst others.

SaTH provides 2 acute hospital sites: The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury and The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, both of which currently provide A&E, inpatient, outpatient and day-case facilities with 24hr blood science provision. The Trust also provides community and outreach services.

  • Registration as a HCPC clinical scientist obtained or near to being obtained
  • Master's Degree in Clinical Biochemistry or assessed equivalent of knowledge plus further specialist training and/or experience within the speciality of Clinical Biochemistry

  • Completion or near completion of STP or other recognised Biochemistry training scheme
