Job summary
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join a team of two Consultant Medical Microbiologists and two SAS doctors.
The post is whole time however, consideration will be given to those who wish to work part-time or job-share. The post is based at the Shrewsbury & Telford Microbiology Laboratory, which is situated on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site.
Main duties of the job
Clinical
- Part of a team responsible for the provision of a comprehensive clinical, laboratory, diagnostic and consultative microbiology and infection control service
- The post holder will be expected to liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, general practitioners and health protection consultants concerning the diagnosis and management of patients
- Participate in regular visits to ITU and ward rounds at the three main sites
- Authorisation and interpretation of results
- To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
- To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
Organisational
- To work with local managers and professional colleagues in the employing Trust in the efficient running of the service.
- To participate in the Continuous Professional Development and the Trust's appraisal scheme.
- To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff and attend all relevant health and safety training.
- Ensure that all Trust-wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by Shrewsbury and Telford hospital NHS Trust.
About us
The laboratory is well equipped. Bacteriology equipment includes 3 Bactec FX blood culture analysers, a Bruker MALDI-TOF, an IRIS QC Sprint urine analyser and 3x BD MicroScan Antibiotic Resistance analysers. Serology and therapeutic drug monitoring is performed on a Roche Cobas 810blood science platform. In addition, there is a Vidas 3 for further testing. Large volume molecular tests are performed on Qiagen Qiasymphony extraction platforms, ABI detection platforms and a Rotagene. Rapid molecular platforms include DRW Samba machines, Abbott ID Now machines and Cepheid GeneXpert.

Essential
- Registered Clinical Scientist with the Health Professions Council
- Considerable experience gained post HCPC registration
Desirable
- Post-graduate degree e.g. PhD or MSc in a relevant subject or equivalent post-graduate training
- o FRCPath or equivalent training
- Management training on an accredited course
- Specialist in one or more areas (e.g. clinical virology, molecular diagnostics)
EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Knowledge and understanding of UK microbiology laboratory practic
- Experience in antimicrobial chemotherapy and clinical management of patients with infection
