We have a wonderful opportunity to work as a specialist Speech and Language Therapist in beautiful South Shropshire. The post is based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury and consists of two days in Ludlow and a day and a half in Church Stretton.

The Ludlow sessions will include the community hospital ward, a mixed neurology outpatient session and the provision of a domiciliary service to the surrounding area. The remainder of the post is providing a service to Church Stretton. This will consist of a mixed neuro outpatient session and a voice outpatient session. The remainder of the time will be providing a domiciliary service to Stretton and the surrounding villages.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive service to a defined geographical area in south Shropshire. They will work autonomously running both voice and neuro outpatients sessions, reviewing ward patients and visiting patients in both care homes and patient's own homes in and around Ludlow and Church Stretton.

You will be able to drive and have access to a vehicle as the area covered is extensive and rural.

You will need to have dysphagia skills at a post graduate level as dysphagia makes up a large proportion of the patients we see. You will also have an opportunity to provide communication and voice therapy.

We also have an established team of voice therapists who meet regularly for support and CPD opportunities. We have access and opportunities to attend a joint consultant/SLT led voice clinic for learning opportunities and to inform patient management.

Additionally, we have access to regular Video fluoroscopy clinics and a burgeoning FEES clinic that we are in the process of developing further. It may be possible to attend these clinics with patients referred from your own caseload to enhance learning and to aid support the patient's management.

About us

The community SLT team at SATH currently consists of 10 Speech and Language Therapists, an Assistant practitioner and a higher clinical support worker.

We work across the whole of Shropshire to include 4 community hospitals and The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt orthopaedic hospital including their specialist spinal unit. We also provide a service into the ICS teams across the county.

We have clinical leads in the areas of Spinal injury, AAC, Dysfluency and Voice.

We are a hard working but friendly and supportive team working in an ever changing and fast paced environment. Given the nature of our caseloads, the range of disorders that we treat and the large geographical area that we cover, the post holder will need to be flexible and resilient, responding to the changing needs of the service on a daily basis.

We are a very busy but friendly team who have monthly staff meetings (with cake!) and have regular clinical and management supervision sessions. We have an annual Professional Group Meeting attended by all SLT teams throughout Shropshire, professional meetings and CPD sessions.
