Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a motivated and efficient Administration Assistant to our Bereavement Service who has a resilient but compassionate nature.

The post holder will provide administrative support to the Bereavement & Medical Examiner team to assist in ensuring that Medical Certificates of Cause of Death are issued in line with, departmental, regional and national policy. Working closely with and supporting both the Medical Examiner Officers and Medical Examiners you will gain an understanding of patient journeys within the health system and help to support those who are bereaved due to the death of a relative in our care or in the community.

The role is full time, 37.5hrs to be worked Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Medical Examiner Officers and Medical Examiners with the administrative duties that come with reviewing a death.
  • By preparing and processing Medical Examiner documentation, scanning medical certificates to the registrar and necessary documents to and from the Coroner's Service.
  • To support the bereaved by taking their phone enquiries and informing them of the Medical Examiner service and what support they will be receiving from the team.
  • Ensuring all relatives are sent a bereavement pack with supportive literature.
  • To liaise with medical staff at all levels to ensure completion of the medical certificate of cause of death and cremation papers in a timely manner.
  • To input and maintain comprehensive data on all the deaths reviewed by our service using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
  • To work across organisational boundaries and establish and maintain good working relationships with Shropshire & Telford Registration Services and the Coroner Office.
  • To provide administrative support to the Medical Examiner Officers with the running of the office environment.
  • Supporting bereaved relatives requests for mortuary visits.
  • Requesting and returning health records and working with ward colleagues to receive health records for medical examiner review

About us

This post will primarily be based from The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, however applicants will be required to work from The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford as and when required to meet the needs of the service and should have reliable transport plans in place to facilitate this.

Working with the Bereavement & Medical Examiner Services will provide an excellent overview of the patient journeys in the health system and an opportunity to belong to a team who puts the Trust's values into practice with every relative contact they have. You will be part of a very inclusive team who work strongly together to ensure relatives are supported and listened to. You will be supported to learn new skills and gain knowledge for the bereavement, medical examiner and coronial systems.
