This job is now closed

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Medical Examiner Officer to join the Medical Examiner service at SaTH. You will be supporting and at times, deputising, for the Lead MEO in the running of the ME Service and supporting and leading the MEOs in the day to day running of the service. You will work alongside MEs supporting them in carrying out their duty of independent scrutiny of the patient's care and ascertain a cause of death. The nature of the job is such that it demands high standards of integrity. It is essential that you have good interpersonal skills with the ability to show empathy and deal sensitively with bereaved families in highly emotive situations, whilst maintaining professional standards. You will possess leadership skills that will equip you to line manage our MEOs and support them with their learning and development whilst at the same time ensuring operational delivery of the service is maintained to a high standard. You will support the Lead MEO in the ongoing expansion of the non-acute service, but also the development of the acute service. Candidates must have completed the mandatory e-learning MEO core training modules and have a commitment to continuing their personal development.

Previous applicants need not apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to support Medical Examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of a patient's death. The service will strengthen safeguards for the public by providing robust, systematic and independent scrutiny of deaths not referred directly to the Coroner; improve the quality of death certification; and avoid unnecessary distress for the bereaved, by answering questions about the cause of death or care given.

The post holder is required to support the Lead MEO in providing line management of the team of Medical Examiner Officers, including (but not limited to) assisting with managing performance, training and wellbeing. The post holder will also act as a senior point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals, Coroner and Registration Services.

The post holder will be required to assist with the development and implementation of Medical Examiner processes within the Trust and in the community. This will include working alongside the Lead MEO and Lead Medical Examiner, to ensure that the service is maintained in accordance with local and national guidelines.

The nature of our work means you can be exposed to distressing and upsetting detail. The role of the Senior MEO can be demanding as you balance responsibilities between leadership and working as an MEO operationally, and so requires an applicant with resilience and the ability to cope under pressure amongst your skill set.

About us

The Medical Examiner Office is a team of knowledgeable & dedicated staff who are committed to helping and supporting family members following the death of a patient in our care. You will benefit from joining a small and friendly team who look out for each another and due to the nature of our work we ensure our colleagues are supported in their roles. We work with staff at all levels and with various internal and external stakeholders and in doing so, you will build a rapport with interdependent departments and services which will expand your knowledge base, skills and experience.

This vacancy will require the post holder to work from both of our hospital sites, the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford to meet the needs of the service and support all of the staff. You should have reliable transport plans in place to facilitate this. The role is 30 hours a week to be worked over 4 days, Tuesday - Friday.
