West London NHS Trust

Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist

The closing date is 01 March 2026

Job summary

The Trust is seeking a consultant forensic psychiatrist to join Broadmoor Hospital (High Secure). The vacancy has arisen as the result of the current Post Holder leaving the service. The successful applicant will be the Responsible Clinician for 12 patients on an admission ward and 5 patients on another ward. They will also be part of a 1 in 12 non-resident on call rota and will be expected to carry out assessments of patients referred to the service (up to 4 per year).

Less than full time applications are also welcomed.

From time to time the specific attachments may be varied to meet the needs of the service, in discussion with the consultant.

The resident grade doctors comprise up to 10 core trainee (CT) 1-3 posts from the Oxford and North West London training schemes. There are also SAS and Trust Grade roles, and the hospital has 14 CT / Trust Grade / SAS posts.

This post will enjoy support from one of these doctors. The post-holder will be expected to be their psychiatric supervisor, for which appropriate training will be provided. In the event of a resident doctor post not being filled, we will provide a specialty grade doctor or a Trust Grade doctor.

Main duties of the job

The Post Holder will be responsible for the care of 12 patients on a high secure admission ward and 5 patients on another ward. All patients admitted to Broadmoor Hospital are admitted to one of three admission wards. The first six months of the admission primarily focus on orientating the patient to the service, completing initial assessments, meeting initial physical and mental health care needs, assessing and managing risk, building therapeutic relationships and commencing the appropriate care and treatment. Primary needs will be linked to mental health, and the identification of other comorbidities, such as previous substance misuse, organic pathology, intellectual difficulties, and autistic spectrum disorder. Following the admission assessment patients will progress to an ISAT (increased support and assertive treatment) ward, intensive care or an assertive rehabilitation ward. Patients on an assertive rehabilitation ward will have transferred from an admission ward or increased support and assertive rehabilitation ward and will have progressed to require less support than on the more acute wards. Whilst on the rehabilitation wards the focus is on treatment, risk reduction and recovery.
