Job summary

We are looking to welcome you! - an experienced Occupational Therapist with knowledge and understanding of working with individuals during a mental health crisis. Working with service-users at a vulnerable time, we are looking for someone who is committed to making a positive difference in their lives.

Crisis Assessment and Treatment Teams (CATT) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary, community based teams offering initial assessments for service users referred to secondary mental health services. CATT offer pathway planning, brief interventions (up to 12 weeks) and crisis intervention in the community which could include intensive, short-term home based treatment where it is appropriately indicated. The team is responsible for gate keeping all inpatient admissions into West London's Acute Adult Mental Health Services, facilitating early discharge for the inpatient wards and community recovery house.

CATT work in partnership with people using mental health services and their families or carers, in order to prevent distress, deterioration and promote recovery. The post holder will have a defined caseload of clients with complex needs using evidenced-based/client-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop groups and will work closely with the Occupational Therapy team based in the inpatient units.

Main duties of the job

To provide a client-centred occupational therapy service to a defined caseload of service users with complex needs, within the local services working with multi-disciplinary team members and the occupational therapy team.

To actively develop and implement a framework of care, which reflects a holistic approach to service user needs, and the seven pillars of clinical governance.

To use evidence-based principles to apply clinical skills and reasoning in occupational therapy, assessment, treatment planning, intervention and evaluation which include individual and group orientated approaches.

To be a resource for the team, providing, occupational therapy professional guidance, and to lead on the evaluation and continued development of the occupational therapy service

To provide leadership and taking responsibility for the direct supervision for less clinically experienced staff, support staff and students including conducting Performance Development Review (PDR) as appropriate.

The post holder will work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team with the opportunity to grow and develop the Occupational Therapy role, with the support of a Senior Occupational Therapist. The Occupational Therapists are part of a wider occupational therapy team within West London NHS Trust and are given the opportunity to link in and network with peers during our Band 5/6 AHP Development Program, AHP Forum and regular training and events.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To ensure that the professional standards and ethics as set out by the College of Occupational Therapists (COT) and Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) are adhered to at all times.

Clinical:

  • All interactions with service users should be underpinned with empathy and a clear understanding of the effects of disability in the areas of productivity, leisure and activities of daily living (ADL).

  • All interactions should be sensitive and responsive to the service users ethnic, cultural and social background, using a range of communication and engagement skills as appropriate to the context.

  • To critically evaluate referrals to the occupational therapy service for occupational therapy intervention, particularly identifying priorities for treatment intervention.

  • To provide a comprehensive assessment and interpret a range of complex clinical findings to develop appropriate, treatment plans intervention and evaluation of the occupational therapy programme that includes risk assessment with particular reference to service user need within the speciality.

Administration/Management:

  • To maintain accurate, clear and concise clinical records and provide verbal and written reports to the clinical team and other relevant parties, adhering to local procedures and professional standards and codes of ethics as related to documentation.

  • To accept and supervise occupational therapy students on practice placements, in negotiation with the teams and as outlined in practice placement guidelines.

  • To provide clinical supervision to staff within level of competency as agreed with head occupational therapist, and follow up and monitor effectively any complex supervision issues that arise.
