Whittington Hospital NHS Trust

Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

The closing date is 20 August 2025

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a part time (3 days per week) 12-month post within Camden SLT Service for Young People. The post is part of a 12-month project to establish an effective service within a multi-site Post-16 College group. This post is a new addition to an existing, successful service within two of the centres, in which the SLT works with young people and adults aged 16-25, who have a range of language, communication and learning difficulties, and with their college staff, and families.

The role includes consultative and clinical skills, utilising these at universal, targeted and specialist levels to upskill college teaching and support staff and ensure communication friendly environments, alongside offers of short term interventions to specific students, providing functional and meaningful communication support.

Within Camden SLT we offer excellent professional development opportunities, with strong emphasis on clinical supervision, and joint working with the team of SLT clinicians who specialise in working with young people aged 11+. You would be welcomed into a friendly, innovative and supportive team.

Feedback from staff has included: "supportive and open culture from management and the service", "friendly colleagues", "well-being is prioritised and supported", "emphasis on reflective practice and innovative ideas", "inclusive culture", "staff collaborating and working together within SLT and the wider multi-professional teams".

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for establishing and delivering a highly specialist service to young people and young adults in post 16 college provisions, and the college staff. You will be working with learners with a range of communication needs. This may include learning disabilities, autism, Down's syndrome and sensory impairments. Some use AAC including Makaton signing, low- and high-tech communication aids. Intervention includes assessments and therapy for individuals or groups.

A knowledge of communication strategies used with the client group is essential. You will be involved in carrying out audits and developing communication friendly environments, and providing targeted and universal support to college and families. You will also be upskilling staff teams and providing training and coaching to staff on how best to support learners.

About us

You will be supported to develop specialist and wide-ranging clinical skills through hands on opportunities, access to expert supervision, regular in-house and paid for CPD and opportunities to link up with the expansive network of Whittington SLTs and wider multi-disciplinary team. We have an agile working policy which offers opportunities to work from home, particularly in the school holidays.

In addition, Whittington Health offers many staff benefits, including flexible working opportunities, health and wellbeing employee benefits including gym discounts and bike loans, employee support including counselling services, performance appraisals, staff excellence awards and NHS discounts on high street brands and services.
