Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Whittington Health NHS Trust.

The Emergency Department has a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre and a dedicated Children's Emergency Department.We are a designated Trauma Unit, as part of the North East London and Essex Trauma Network.

You will join a dedicated and passionate team committed to delivering a first class service in terms of quality, safety, innovation and education. You will have the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the Emergency Department and take part in initiatives to improve emergency care across the whole of the acute pathway.

Job description

Job responsibilities

DUTIES OF THE POST

Provide senior leadership on the shopfloor during scheduled clinical shifts in order to coordinate the delivery of safe and excellent clinical care to all patients attending the Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre.

Supervise junior doctors and nurse practitioners in the assessment and management of patients and provide senior clinical review where appropriate.

Work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and inpatient specialty teams in order to ensure care is delivered in a streamlined and timely manner across the acute pathway.

Lead clinical rounds in all areas of the Emergency Department in order to review patients and management plans, and to ensure safe handover.

Promote a strong focus on achieving and maintaining national and local quality and performance standards.

Participate in an on-call rota to provide consultant cover to the department during the out of hours period.

Participate in the administration and management of the department and attend the monthly Senior Team meetings.

Support and develop the departmental clinical governance strategy and take part in Patient Safety and Clinical Governance meetings.

Participate in departmental clinical meetings including the Paediatric and Adult Safeguarding meeting.

Liaise with in-patient specialty teams in order to smooth interface across disciplines and provide integrated and patient centred care.

Build relationships and collaborate with General Practice and Community colleagues to ensure integration and innovation between primary and secondary care.

Develop guidelines in order to ensure systematic delivery of evidence-based care.

Participate in departmental and Royal College audit programmes and work with the multidisciplinary team to devise and implement quality improvements.

Act as a named Educational or Clinical Supervisor to Foundation and Specialty Trainees in the department.

Participate in the Emergency Department teaching programmes for medical students, junior doctors, registrars, ENPs and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

Support teaching and training within the wider organisation and across the region, including participation as faculty in resuscitation and simulation courses.

Support academic Emergency Medicine activity in the department and region and take part in research with the local network.

Support and the medical, nursing, and administrative workforce in the department.

Promote and inspire Clinical Excellence in Emergency Medicine at the Whittington.
