Cardiac Physiologist Band 5

Contract Type - Permanent - Full time 37.5 hours per week

The Whittington Hospital is situated in a busy vibrant area of North London close to Hampstead Heath and has excellent transport links being served by the Northern Line, London Overground plus several bus routes into central London.

The Cardiology Investigations Unit at Whittington Health is a small busy department offering full non-invasive Cardiology and standard Echocardiography services to both paediatric and adult patients. We also run a pacemaker follow up clinic serving the local community. The department currently supports 4 cardiologists. We work closely with the RACPC and heart failure services as well as supporting a wide variety of other disciplines, such as oncology, respiratory, maternity and care of the older person.

We are seeking suitably qualified, motivated Cardiac Physiologists to join our friendly team.

Applicants can be newly or recently qualified cardiac physiologist and should have BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent, ideally a year's broad experience in non-invasive cardiology and be able to demonstrate competence in a range of non-invasive procedures. Introduction to and training in echo and pacing can be provided to suitable candidates.

They should be willing to work towards RCCP/AHCS registration.

Main duties of the job

To be a member of a skilled team of Cardiac Physiologists, providing non-invasive cardiac investigations for inpatients and outpatients.

The successful candidate will undertake the following routine non-invasive clinical physiological tests: ECGs, Stress tests, Ambulatory BP and ECG monitoring, Event recorders.

To provide factual reports for all routine investigations under supervision to enable clinical decisions to be made by medical staff regarding patient treatment

Maintain discipline and standards of technical competency in the provision of non-invasive investigative services within the department.

Actively participate towards the smooth day to day running of the department, confirming ECGs, sending reports out to GPs and consultants, answering phone calls.

The department is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team including four Cardiology Consultants providing a full diagnostic cardiovascular service to the hospital and local general practitioners.

Over many years, our department has pioneered services that have bridged the divide between different parts of the National Health Service. This opportunity has become more apparent with the establishment of Whittington Health as an integrated care organisation following the merger of the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust with Islington Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Haringey PCT, becoming the first integrated care organisation (ICO) in the United Kingdom.

Job responsibilities

  1. Actively participate in the provision of a non invasive cardiac investigations service following a period of training in a broad range procedures following a period of training and assessment:
  • To perform and interpret and the recording of electrocardiograms on adults and children.
  • Application, removal and analysis of ambulatory ECG and BP equipment and confidently generate a comprehensive and accurate report.
  • Application, removal and analysis of event monitors and confidently generate a comprehensive and accurate report.
  • Lead exercise/treadmill testing with supervision from a senior. colleague, by preparing patient, accurately recording data and monitoring blood pressure and ECG signals.
  • To be fully conversant with the emergency cardiac arrest procedure including defibrillation and maintaining concentration and composure in highly stressful situations.
  • Assist senior colleagues with pacemaker follow-up checks.
  1. Record patient diagnostic and management information using manual, and computer based systems.
  2. Maintain accurate and legible patient records in line with department SOP
  3. Recognise technical/equipment faults and take steps to correct them following the departmental SOP
  4. Ensure all equipment is operated safely, cleaned and stored according to department SOP.
  5. Arrange technical support for repairs and or maintenance when necessary.
  6. Assist with day to day administration
  7. Deal with patient enquiries over the telephone and in person.
  8. Distribute results and reports to GP and Consultants.
  9. Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables used within their area, receive and store new stock appropriately.
  10. Provide training and support to undergraduate trainees, nursing staff and medical students.
  11. Assist senior colleagues in the introduction and evaluation of new equipment and technology.
  12. Assist senior colleagues in the updating and development of policies relating to their practice.
