Job summary

The Clinical Fellow posts are based at the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) unit, and acute assessment unit. The split of the post is 50% AAU/ 50% AEC, with an option to be involved in undergraduate medical education (10% of the post).

The sessions are negotiable, and we can adjust the sessions that are advertised to accommodate postgraduate studies or combine other work to widen your portfolio.

About us

Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff. We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. The Trustbelieves that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities (45/50% of post)

Ambulatory Care Unit

The post-holder will work on a weekly rota consisting of early shifts (08.30am-16.30pm), mid morning 10.00am-18.00pm, or late shifts (12.30pm-20.30pm). The post holder will be expected to contribute to the weekend staffing of the AEC. The successful applicant will be involved with the initial assessment of patients, organising relevant investigations in an out-patient setting and the ongoing management and discharge of patients back to the community. AEC works closely with inpatient teams, including radiology, surgery, orthopaedics, medical specialities, microbiology, Tissue Viability Nursing as well as the Emergency Department, community teams with a community matron attending daily board rounds.

The Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) Service was opened at the Whittington Hospital in February 2012 and since then has flourished and gained national repute. We are a highly recognised unit within NHS elect and have attracted national as well as international interest. As a relatively newly formed Integrated Care Organisation (ICO) we believe that we can provide the best possible treatment, with continuity of care without the need for an inpatient stay for many of our patients.

Undergraduate medical teaching (optional 10% of the post)

The post-holders teaching responsibilities are

(1) to deliver teaching within the medical specialties to undergraduate medical students at the Whittington campus of UCL Medical School (supported by curriculum leads), and

(2) to support the development of teaching skills in other clinicians.

The post-holder will be teaching module A of the year 4 (first clinical year) curriculum. Module A consists of Acute medicine, Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine. There will be opportunities to develop as a teacher and educator. As an example, a recent fellow has spent time developing paediatric simulation teaching for the iBSc and year 5 UCL students and has written tutor guides for those who provide undergraduate teaching across specialties. The post-holder will need to be flexible in their approach as the teaching and clinical commitments may vary throughout the year based on the students academic term timetable. The post-holder must have some experience at providing pastoral care for peers and/or students thus far in their career.

The post-holder will be expected to build a generic clinical educational portfolio. They will be supported in this by an educational, developmental and appraisal process. They will be encouraged to complete a formal qualification in medical education if desired. A personalised development plan will be constructed to provide suitable learning opportunities and encourage exposure to advanced teaching techniques including (where relevant) behavioural feedback, high fidelity full immersion simulation, and technologically advanced part task trainers and other technical skills-based devices.

The post-holder will be encouraged to undertake research in any area of medical education, but we particularly welcome applicants with a strong background and interest in novel teaching approaches.

Acute Assessment Unit (45/50%)

The post-holder has 50% of their role working in AAU, both ward work and out of hours acute unselected medical takes and ward cover, with clinical supervision by AAU and AEC consultants registrars and consultants. The post-holder will be an advocate to promote same day emergency care (SDEC) through working in Ambulatory care.
