Senior Specialist Pain Nurse

Job summary

The post holder will be a high-profile practitioner working across both the inpatient pain service at University Hospital Coventry and the chronic pain outpatient clinics at Rugby St Cross Hospital, delivering high-quality pain management across the Trust. They will provide specialist pain advice, clinical support and education to all members of the multi-professional team, ensuring safe, effective and evidence-based practice. Working within their speciality and scope of practice, the practitioner will make informed clinical decisions to support the achievement of agreed standards, targets and service objectives.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within the acute pain team to meet the needs of patients, contribute to service delivery and ensure adherence to Trust policies and procedures. The role includes leading on evidence-based acute and chronic pain management strategies in partnership with patients and healthcare professionals, offering expert clinical advice to clinical teams across the Trust, and supporting the ongoing development of junior members of the pain team. The post holder will also be involved in audit, research and continuous service improvement to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the Pain Management Service.

The Inpatient Acute Pain Team oversees the care of patients receiving advanced pain management following major Trauma and/or surgery, including epidurals and peripheral nerve blocks.

The Chronic Pain Outpatient Clinics at Willow Unit St Cross Hospital Rugby, involves working alongside Specialist Consultants. The clinic involves delivery of chronic pain specialist treatments such as lignocaine infusions and trigger point injections. These clinics are consultant led and the nursing role is developing to meet service needs.

Clinical

1 .Act as a liaison between the Pain Management Service and the ward areas to promote a seamless service of high quality care for patients with acute, chronic or cancer pain in accordance with current evidence based practice.

2.Provide specialist pain management for complex pain problems including acute pain following surgery, trauma or disease, neuropathic pain, pain in the opioid tolerant patients, acute and chronic pain, pain in patients with drug dependency and acute cancer pain.

3. Works autonomously whilst part of a multidisciplinary team to manage own caseload of patients providing advice and clinical support to the multi-professional team throughout the Trust.

4 .In collaboration with the multi-professional team, accurately assess patients treatment requirements and develop, implement and evaluate plans of care.

5. Implement and support the introduction of new methods of pain management across all wards / departments as required.

6. Identify and implement, in collaboration with the team, appropriate areas for research and/or audit to ensure effectiveness of the Pain Management Service and participate in the collection of mandatory information/data.

7. Undertake prescribing using the individualised scope of practice for non-medical prescribing in accordance with the UHCW formulary when appropriate competencies and education have been achieved.

8. Contribute to the development and advancement of pain management across the Trust.

9. Participates in consultant led clinics and undertakes nurse led clinics as service development demands.

10. Undertakes clinical procedures in advanced methods of pain relief in line with Trust guidelines and protocols.

12. Oversee the management of all patients receiving advanced pain management techniques such as Intrathecal opiates, epidural infusions and continuous local anaesthetic infusions.

13 Support chronic pain service by working with clinic staff when required dependant on service need, involving split site working at both University Hospital Coventry and St Cross Hospital Rugby

14.Works as an independent practitioner using clinical decision making, to plan and support pain management plans for patients with complex pain.

15.Responsible for accurate, timely documentation of clinical plan in patients on EPR system used in the TRUST

16.Deputise for Band 8a, Lead nurse for pain in his/her absence.
