Job summary

We are looking for a motivated, compassionate, and dependable nurse to join our Head & Neck and Thyroid Cancer team as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist.

In this pivotal role, you will work alongside an experienced team of Clinical Nurse Specialists to deliver holistic, patient-centred care. You will provide expert physical, psychological, and emotional support to patients and their families throughout the cancer pathway, ensuring continuity and high-quality care at every stage.

You will collaborate closely with the wider Head & Neck multidisciplinary team, contributing your specialist knowledge to treatment planning and service development.

As a Band 7 CNS, you will demonstrate strong leadership and management skills. You will mentor junior colleagues, support clinical education, and play an active role in developing and implementing protocols, pathways, and quality-improvement initiatives. Your leadership will help drive excellence across the service and uphold the highest standards of patient care.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities include: Providing high-quality care for patients with head and neck cancer, offering psychosocial support to patients and families, and acting as a key worker throughout and beyond treatment. The role requires advanced clinical assessment skills within nurse-led clinics, autonomous and collaborative practice, and ensuring holistic needs are considered in decision-making. You will use advanced communication skills, participate in MDT meetings, manage complex clinical issues, perform specialised technical skills, support staff during challenging situations, and contribute to training within defined areas.

Leadership and management responsibilities include: Acting in line with the Code of Professional Conduct, supporting staff and service development, contributing to Quality Surveillance Programme documentation, advising on policies and governance, modelling high standards of care, collaborating with cancer nursing teams, ensuring accurate use of IT systems, and promoting adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policies.

Education, teaching, audit, and research responsibilities include: Evaluating cancer survey results and developing action plans, assessing patient and family education needs, and providing specialist education to professionals involved in head and neck cancer care.
