Lead Pharmacy Technician, Education and Training

Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician with a passion for training and developing others to our highest standards. The role will support and line manage Trainee Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants with the support of the education and training team, ensuring staff are professionally developed to provide excellent pharmacy patient services.

Main duties of the job

  • Line manage and develop Trainee Technicians through NVQ Level 3 and Pharmacy Assistants through NVQ Level 2 training programmes with inclusion of the NVQ Assessment team.
  • To line manage and support the Senior Technician and Pharmacy Assistant for Education and Training.
  • To be a key contact for the Trust and network with the regional training and education Leads, attending regional sub-groups to assure continuous good practice for pharmacy staff.
  • To be responsible for the professional development of technical staff and to facilitate the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of Pharmacy staff through wider learning initiatives.
  • To manage and develop newly qualified Technicians and support staff in education and training initiatives.
  • Lead on department wellbeing initiatives; to ensure we are supporting our colleagues professionally and their wellbeing

Job responsibilities

  • Leading and co-ordinating the training of pharmacy technical staff, maintaining the highest professional standards and ensuring trainees comply with all pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Health and Safety and Human Resources policies and procedures in partnership with team leaders and Strategic Leadership Team.

  • Contribute to the planning, delivery, and continuous improvement of pharmacy medicines management initiatives that support safe, effective and timely admission and discharge processes across inpatient wards. Carry out medicines reconciliation using the electronic patient record (EPR) system and other clinical information sources to ensure an accurate, up to date medication history is obtained and documented for each patient. Use EPR systems competently to review medication charts, document interventions, process discharge prescriptions and support communication within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Check prescriptions for clarity and, safety on wards, in dispensaries and the Aseptic Unit and when necessary take accurate drug histories to facilitate this. Querying with the prescriber or a pharmacist any clinical or technical issues.
  • Ensure safe and appropriate practice and work closely with the pharmacy Governance team, and clinical, dispensary and ward service Leads.
  • To manage and recruit to the externally funded education places for Pre-Registration Technicians via National funding pathways and work with the Trust Apprenticeship Team.
  • To contribute to pharmacy related training to nursing staff.
