Consultant Breast Therapeutic Radiographer

Job summary

This post is fundamentally a training post, however, would support a trained Consultant Therapeutic Radiographer in Breast and / or support additional training to complete said training. The Consultant Therapeutic Radiographer Trainee will work towards becoming an independent consultant practitioner providing a highly specialised, complex and comprehensive radiotherapy service to patients within breast oncology. Working within codes of practice and professional guidelines, the post holder will have freedom to act, assess and treat a specialised caseload of patients from referral to follow up including survivorship.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

  1. To practice at a consultant level providing expert and specialised care for patients receiving radiotherapy for breast cancer, with a very high degree of autonomy and responsible for patient management through the entire radiotherapy pathway.
  2. To act as core member at MDT meetings with responsibility for treatment decision making and managing direct referrals of patients requiring radiotherapy within site specialism.
  3. To lead outpatient clinics, carrying out appropriate clinical assessment and consultation of patients referred to you, including gaining informed consent for treatment. May be required to carry out some clinics away from UHCW to support training and development under an honorary contract.

  • To ensure that all patients and carers have the necessary information to give informed consent for all procedures, including the development of relevant patient information leaflets and booklets.

  • To review patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy and advise and manage this complex treatment as along with the management of acute radiation induced toxicity and the associated side effects of cancer treatment.
  • Undertake independent or supplementary prescribing within scope of practice using expert analytical skills and judgement and/or administration of medication using Patient Group Directions.
  • To undertake assessment, provide support, information and education to patients post treatment in follow up clinics.
  • To provide expert clinical information and advice to the multidisciplinary teams across the network and in the primary healthcare setting (e.g. GPs, community nurses).
