Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics

Job summary

There is an opportunity for a Clinical Scientist to join the radiotherapy physics team at the Arden Centre Coventry for a period of 12 months to provide maternity cover. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work in all major areas within the department; brachytherapy, dosimetry, quality control and treatment planning.

The Arden Centre is equipped with five Elekta linacs, an orthovoltage treatment machine and Elekta HDR brachytherapy after loader. All our linacs are equipped with Agility heads and cone beam CT. We have a modern portfolio of techniques including a growing SABR service.

The Radiotherapy Physics department has active research collaborations with the University of Warwick and Coventry University with which the post holder will be encouraged to participate.

Applicants should be a registered Clinical Scientist or be about to their complete training as a Clinical Scientist. Applications from talented scientist with less experience may be considered and appointed on a lower band. We are open to the discussion of part time, flexi-time and limited working from home arrangements.

Secondment will be considered for internal candidates - If you are successful after interview, you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

The ACC is equipped with five Elekta linacs, an orthovoltage treatment machine, Elekta HDR brachytherapy and RayStation treatment planning system. All of our linacs are equipped with Agility heads and cone beam CT. We have a modern portfolio of techniques including a growing SABR service.

The Radiotherapy Physics department has active research collaborations with the University of Warwick and Coventry University with which the post holder will be encouraged to participate. We are an accredited training department at all levels of medical physics including HSST.

The Centre is located on the University Hospital site at Walsgrave which is on the edge of historic Coventry with convenient transport to the City and easy access to rural Warwickshire, the M6 and the M69 motorways.

  • To provide Scientific Expertise and Clinical Technical Services for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
  • When required by the Radiotherapy Physics Rota, to provide scientific expertise and clinical technical services in the provision of Treatment Planning, Mould Room, and Machine Quality Control in Radiotherapy.
  • The post holder is required to plan own workload, organise own projects and prioritise requests. To adapt schedules several times a day in response to unpredictable urgent requests.
  • To discuss complex aspects of patient treatment with medical staff, scientists, technologists, radiographers and nurses. To scientifically interpret complex patient treatment related information from medical staff. To initiate and participate in research and development. To be accountable for the work of staff and students whose work they are supervising.
  • To discuss complex technical and scientific aspects of equipment and software performance with scientists, technologists and representatives of equipment manufacturers.
  • The holder decides how to achieve defined results, with discretion to work within the parameters of professional guidelines and departmental procedures. Guidance may be provided by colleagues, or the Head of Radiotherapy Physics.
