Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportinity for someone with an interest in children and young people with allergies.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and hard-working individual. Someone who has an excellent clinical skill set and the compassion and communication skills to foster efficient relationships. They must effectively care for the child and families of children with allergies who require both physical, emotional, and psychological support.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The paediatric allergy nurse specialist will act as a clinical expert and professional resource to the multi professional team, patients, families and their carers. The post holder will be responsible for the development of teaching packages, protocols and advice sheets within the speciality.

You will assist in the development and expansion of the allergy service within the acute trust setting which includes both inpatient and outpatient services.

You will work closely with the Band 7 Paediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist deputising as required. You will work alongside the Paediatric Allergy Consultant, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurse consultant and wider multi-disciplinary team. You will provide specialist treatments, guidance and advice for patients, parents, carers, and staff and help to develop the service across the trust.

The role will include monitoring the progress of the allergy patients, evaluating the effects of treatment interventions, ensuring patient safety, and optimising their health and wellbeing. You will ensure best practice is always upheld and liaise with other health care professionals to improve the treatment and care of children and young people with allergies.

  • To support and participate in Consultant and Nurse-led clinics, working within guidelines, as agreed by the allergy multidisciplinary team.
  • Organise and deliver a safe and comprehensive allergy skin testing and substance challenging service for children.
  • To interpret allergy results appropriately in accordance with guidelines agreed with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To develop treatment pathways for allergies in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team for children, families and schools.
  • Support and teach children, parents and carers to actively manage allergic reactions, including the use of epipens.
  • Support patients, parents, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. following an unexpected event or diagnosis of allergy.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for allergy patients in secondary care and using this understanding to improve the individual patients understanding of their condition and management. Identify their needs; provide education, monitoring and support.
  • To act as an advocate for, and support, the patient and their carers. Assist in co-ordinating the efforts of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Be aware of the key therapies available to these patients and be conversant with their usage, ensuring patients and professionals have sufficient knowledge to deliver safe and effective care.
  • Undertake a holistic assessment of patients needs encompassing physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues, including the needs of their family and carers. Support patients exploring the use of alternative therapies.
  • Promote health education advice.
  • Support the team in providing an effective e-mail advice service for patients, their relatives, general practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals.
  • To support the allergy team to work within agreed budgetary levels and ensure effective use of resources.
